Well i been debating a 5spd swap...
And before I decide I want to know all that will be needed.

If anyone can I would like to know about everything needed to be done.
What all do I need to complete the swap and I mean everything.. Also what is the compatible things I can use ?
I dont have to worry about labor as I live and r friends with a transmission shop and will just get it done there.

Also if you know average price from a yard or just almost new parts from somewhere.

Thanks.

so wait, based on that thread: If I swapped the trans in my 01 ATX with one from a pre-2001 neon, I could use the cable instead of the hydro as long as i went with a 2000 clutch?

everyone is telling me to swap it, and I really want to but I just dont want to deal with setting up the cylinders. also, what trans would fit and which one would be best for my 01? will any MTX from 95-00 fit? thanks guys!!!

I'm in the same boat as you are 01white neon. let me know what you decide to go with if you go through with it!

im curious about this as well.. one of the biggest problems i have is its hard to find a 2gn MTX anywhere near me, however there are tonnes of 1st gens... so id like to know if i could go back to an older trans.. (id be putting in a better clutch, t/o bearing and flywheel) or should i stick with the newer stronger 2gn mtx.... And can i set this mother up so i can use a cable instead of a hydro setup.. don't really like the feel of the hydro's, or lack of feel, i should say.

White I've been in on 2 swaps I can lend you hand when you do it i just need notice to so i can take off work. Normally start on fri evening everything by sunday afternoon at the latest if all goes well. I know I few other guys that I could ask as well to help.

96 and up MTXs will work most who do it look for the R/T trans due to the gearing. Cables are much easier to do. 3.94 and 3.55 are the 2 types of tranys with the 3.94 being the better of the 2.

I performed a visual inspection of both a 1995 MTX and a 2000 MTX, and they appear to be identical on the outside. Same bolt holes, same bellhousing patterns, etc. As far as bolting up the MTX, there should not be an issue with using a 1GN MTX on a 2GN.

Only issue that I can see for using a 1GN MTX is the little plastic pinion gear for the VSS. You might want to install the correct pinion gear, so that your speedo doesn't read incorrectly.

anybody ever thought of trying to swap in an srt4 trans? it already has an lsd.

the 95 uses a diff style clutch.. non modular i think, whereas all the other cable trannies used the modular clutch.. (or do i have that backwards?, ) anyway u want 96-00 tranny, and some early 01's were cable trans..

you can also use the current flywheel from your auto, the it will bolt right up to it, factory did that for easy prodution between atx and mtx on the assembly line...

i think i read on another post, the srt trans doesnt bolt up right...

last thing, buy my stuff, i have the shifter, shifter base, shift boot and knob, also the clutch and brake pedal setup from a 01 cable tranny w/ all the clutch pedal stop, wiring pigtails etc.. i was gonna do the swap on my 01, but changed my mind..

AFAIK, in an '01+, you just need to swap the bellhousing for a non-SRT bellhousing (for the 2.0L SOHC engine).

In an '00, it's more complicated than that... swapping any kind of '01+ transmission into an '00 is difficult because the firewall doesn't have the provisions for the hydraulic unit.

From what I understand (for example), swapping an SRT-4 engine/trans into a 2000 year car requires hacking and rewelding of the firewall to accommodate the hydraulic cyllinder parts.
