ATX is finally starting to go

Well my the trans in my Turbo ATX is finally starting to go. Its got 150k on it and was never serviced so i'm not surprized. I considered doing an MTX swap, then remembered I know next to nothing about transmissions and i'm having a hard enough time finding a replacement PCM that will work for my ATX, I dont want to go through it all again to find one for an MTX. So i'm thinking I will stick with the ATX. I've changed my axles before and from what i've heard thats a good portion of the work. Is it really that much harder from there to get the rest of the trans out? Also, I saw the "high performance overhaul kit" on modern performance. Is that a complete rebuild kit? or are there other things that would be needed with it? When the trans is swapped should I still go with the traditional ATF +4 or is there a better fluid I should be using? Thanks for the help guys!

To make life easier do this on a lift if you have access to one. We did my tranny in my garage out of necessity and it was a PITA of royal proportions. You'll have to clear the crossmember to get the tranny in/out so plan on doing some back n forth dancing to make it fit; if you can get the front bumper off that can help entry + exit for the tranny. Oh, if you don't have a hoist or tranny jack, a bud who can bench press about 350 would be ideal too! ATX trannies are heavy mothers! :cussing: (250-350 lbs).

Depending on how bad the internals are crunched up it can be fairly straightforward or a nightmare. If you've never done work on an ATX I suggest you have a pro rebuild it. If anything try to get a hold of RacerSteve on the .org. He can build you a bulletproof tranny (his 1st gen typically ran 9's, low 10's w/ a built ATX). That's all I can think of off the top of my head but let me know if you need any more info. Good luck bro.

Thanks for the info! i'm still deciding what I want to do. I can get a junk yard one for under $500 but i'm sure it wont hold out for too long. Or theres a guy a friend of mine knows that said he will do it all and rebuild it for $1350.

For starters....
the 9sec ATX was probably a 3speed and not a 4speed....there is not too much you can do to a 4 speed due to it being an electronic trani....
I'm actually in the process of installing an overhauled trani in my wife's caravan as we speak. There is an overhaul kit for the 41TE trani(4speed) that msrp's around $200. I'll have to get the part number later...
I'm looking at personally a total of $250 to get a used trani rebuilt and throw the tech a few bucks...
Dont spend $500 on an unkown condition used trani, its not worth it.

ah, yeah your right. most of the junkyards around here will still warranty it and will just give you another if it goes within a few months. But your right, why spend $500 on a tranny that probably wont last me a year when i can spend $1350 on one that can hold the power i'm putting out and I wont have to worry about it. I'll just save my money and wait until its really bad before I go. I think a band is out of adjustment or something though, because I changed the fluid and it shifts smoother but slipping wise its no better or worse. But this is a 3spd., so the guy I have working on it should be able to do some good stuff to it.

Also i'm probably going to go with the high performance overhaul kit on moderns website, which says creats "tire chirping shifts". the high performance valve body says it does the same thing. If I go with the high performance overhaul kit, and the high performance valve body do you think that will be too much for a daily driver? thanks!

I had a 92 daytona with a slipping badly 3speed....
I dropped the valve body out, re-adjusted the bands to OE specs, modded the valve body with the free mod(actually $2-$5) then installed a trani cooler, new filter and fluid. The trani lasted another year with a different owner beating the heck out of it. The trani mod firms up the shifts without damaging the trani...

ok cool maybe i'll try that. I am in no way uncomfortable working on my car but i'll be the first to admit that I dont know much about transmissions. I can change the filter in mine just fine. But how hard is it to adjust the bands? and how do I get the valve body out, do I just take the screws out and it comes out? thanks!

I had to laugh at that. I've been under there benching on a couple of occassions and all that runs through your mind is "HURRY THE FUCK UP!!!! GET THAT MOUNT BOLT IN!!!! I'M GOING TO CRUSH MY SKULL!!!!" as your arms keep trying to dump it on you. After the second time I went out with a friend and bought a jack. Good ole days FTW!
