Regarding 5spd Swap

Well My car has been sitting now for the past couple days because the auto tranny is going on me.. Revs up vibrates then drags then starst to drive.
My question is after going around to lots and yards trying to find a 5spd 1st gen my question is before buying a 1st gen or parts what exactly do I need for a 5spd swap before I buy a 1st gen and not have everything i need and mess up my car.

My knowledge is that I need...
Mtx Tranny
clutch
flywheel
clutch cable
shift linkage
mtx axles
shifter
mtx pedals

The guy at the yard told me that the mtx now even needs a computer, Would I need any new pcm anything not from a 1st gen ( I think the clutch cable would need to be for a 2nd gen )
Do you need to swap the mtx axles...

Now the question is should I take it to the transmission shop and fix the atx or is it risky going into the 5spd swap ( my car is a dd )

will the first gen get me all the parts for the swap (excl clutch cable) and how long do you think it would take me to do the swap.. I know a guy to pay that already fully built srts and talons.

All help is helpful I know I can search but I want to make sure before I mess up my car.

Do you have a bell housing from a trans with a hydraulic bell housing? If you're using a 2nd gen pedal and lines, you are doing the hydraulic setup, and need the matching bell housing.

you dont have to have the MTX PCM u could use the ATX PCM but it will have the lower rev limiters.

thats all the for sure input that i can say

:beatstick: dont tell him that......
When switching from an ATX to a MTX the PCM is going to search for a signal from the trani, that alone will trigger a CEL. If you have a 4speed already and its your daily driver just stick with a used replacement trani and go from there. Daily drivers typically have no down time! doing the swap to a MTX without all the proper knowledge and materials is NOT a good idea!
Stick with the 4speed as replacement until you know you have enough time and materials to do a MTX swap.....

See that's the nice thing about an '00. You can put in whatever tranny you want. It's not computer controlled until LATE '01, which leads me to my next question for the thread starter:

Are you indeed ydraulic or not? If you have an earlier '01, then you can swap to an '00-early '01 mechanical MTX and be done with it.

I have a 2001 Dodge neon 3spd.
and I would be using the parts from the 1st gen. except the clutch cable ?

Yea not to mention once you get around anywhere between 2000rpm to 4000rpm it will start bucking like crazy and possibly throw P0740. My friend josh had that problem with his 1st gen MTX swap.

Depends on WHEN your 2001 was build. Later ones used electronically-controlled ATX's, and everything these guys are warning you about would be true. EARLIER 2001's used mechanical ATX's and are switchable to non-hydraulic MTX. (or so I've read)

In my 2001 DaimlerChrysler Neon Service Manual the only thing that it shows having a solenoid going to is the TC lockup - pg. 21-150. the valve body is all mechanical plus the 31TH is the only atx in the manual so my guess is the 41TE was not an option till later years. although the speed cotrol section mentins the 4speed EATX go figure. As far as inputs for the 3 speed go: "Inputs that determine clutch engagment are: coolant temperature, vehicle speed and throttle position."(These are for the TC clutch.)So... codes shouldn't be an issue as these three inputs are going to be there anyways. The solenoid for the TC could be removed from the trans and plugged in so the computer still reads it. I would think going to a 41TE woulb be more difficult than going to the mtx as far as controls go. Bolt in would obvioulsy be easier. Depends on your level of experience in each area. Of course getting another 3 speed atx would be the easiest route.

Well since its my dd and I kinda need it and cant tie it up today it went into the tranny shop to fix the atx :(
My dad said instead of paying for all the shit and then having it not work.. fix it then sell it if you want a 5spd =/ so atx for now i guess.

Considering it's your main form of transportation, probably the best choice. Unfortunatly not what you want, but what you need as is usually the case. Hope the cost isn't too much.
