Transmission Fluid Capacity

I just picked up a tranny filter at Autozone, and am planning on dropping the pan and replacing the filter. How much fluid will I need to buy to restore what's taken out? I'm driving a 2003 2.0 SXT.

I just looked at my 2004 FSM (which would be the same as your 03) and it said to start with 4 and work your way up til its full.

If it were me I would get 5 or 6 qts.

Also, remember that it takes ATF+4 use of anything other than an ATF+4 fluid could result in torque converter sudder. Valvoline, Castrol, Mopar, etc. as long as it says ATF+4 then your good.

I'm also looking at draining the diff if possible. Is that as simple as just undoing a screw and letting it drain, or would I have to crack it open?
Where else can you put cock, skirt and slap in a paragrah, and be writing about something not sexually related!

The diff and the transaxle are all one unit. Draining the trans should drain the diff.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed :). Sorry about the wrong location.

EDIT: Ok, just did it tonight. It may take a bit for the pan to get off of the gasket, I found that waiting a bit and then pushing a small flathead screwdriver in to start wedging it off worked best.

Now my next question is, there was about a 1/2" of metal shavings collected on the magnet (looked like a big blob of grease), and covering the old filter. Is this normal? My car has about 83.6k miles on it,

That is normal. The magnet is there to collect the shavings, otherwise all those would be floating around in your transmission.

Is there a reuseable silicone gasket available for the transmission pan? Or do I just use silicone to seal it back up?

One time I put in 3 bottles like the MTX's take and it was slipping like a bitch until I added the other the other quart

Don't you have an auto? If so, auto's take a lot more fluid than manuals. Don't use a manual trans capacity to fill your auto.

Just barely seeing this because i'm about to drain my ATX tonight. It's shifting kinda ugly.

Frank, yeah I didn't know it was an extra quart. Now I know to put 4 quarts of the stuff.

Does anyone know off the top of their head the size of socket to drop the pan? I'm hoping I can get this done relatively quick.

MTX Fluid capacities:

00 2.0-2.4 quarts
01-05 2.5-2.8 quarts

ATF 4 is reccomended

so i just attempted this and when i drained the fluid after dropping the pan i got nearly the full 8.6 quarts instead of the 4 quarts autozone told me would come out, should this be cause for concern?

Oh, and after dropping the pan i noticed the previous owner had put in thread inserts and while trying to remove one of the pan bolts i broke one should i drill out/ tap or just install a new thread insert?

I wouldn't worry about the extra coming out, just put in the correct amount. If it was shifting normal, and not flowing out the dipstick tube when hot, it prolly didn't hurt anything.

If the whole insert came out, just replace it. Maybe use some red thread locker on the new one, and let it cure well before putting a screw back in. Also put some anti-seize on the screws to help them from sticking to the said thread locker, and the insert(s). You don't want to put that bolt in place when the thread locker is still wet. You may never get it out again. Blue would be less aggressive, but may not retain the insert.

Edit:
Also verify the insert is the same thread as the rest of the screws. If they put in an SAE thread vs metric, the metric heli-coil insert will not work. Just be sure to take the screw with you to get the correct insert.
