i have a feeling it would cost more than it would be worth... and as worthless as our ATXs are, you'd be better off going MTX.

Hmmm. How have you "killed" MTX's? Don't get me wrong, the auto is pretty beefy for what it is, but it is still an automatic.

Ya.. but they got a bit more torque.. do the not, due to the torque converter..
And by kill I dont mean by a huge distance, maybe bout a car, 2 car length.. *usually*

Ummmm...no.
Transmissions don't give you torque. The engine does, the transmission transmits that torque to the wheels. Due to the complicated nature of an automatic, you actually lose more torque and horsepower due to additional drivetrain loss (general rule of thumb is an addition 5% loss in a auto vs a MTX).
And not to rain on your parade, but on two equal Neons, one being an auto and one a manual, the manual will be faster. The main factor for an auto winning a heads up race is usually due to the person in the MTX not knowing how to shift properly

my 04 SXT MTX was a full second faster, bone stock, @ 16.4 than my 00 ES ATX was with intake, exhaust and UDP, @ 17.4
so i call
unless, of course, the other driver couldn't drive worth a shit, or wasn't even aware they were "racing" you.

And you all should be aware that a "shitty" neon ATX went 7.8 @ 188 in the quarter right? DCR knows how to build 'em and they only modified the valve bodies and clutch packs to hold the ~1400hp they were running...

That is a totally different beast. You can't compare that to a street car.

And they were probably using the 3 speed as well.

I'm not comparing an all-out drag car to a street car. I'm comparing a relatively stock 3-speed to your absolutely stock ATX.
It can and is a very capable drag trans, but if your worried about mileage or street performance, then yes, go MTX. Both of my cars are and I wouldn't have it any other way, unless I trailered my 600+hp 1st gen coupe with locker and HUGE slicks (which doesn't currently exist)....

My Turbo ACR ran a best of 13.5 @ 104mph on street tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE950's) and 13.1 @ 104mph (With M/T Drag Radials) with an ATX and only 10psi of boost and a bad tuning job.
Street Tires
R/T: .796
60': 2.244
330: 5.908
1/8: 8.846
MPH: 84.12
1000: 11.374
1/4: 13.542
MPH: 104.28
M/T Drag Radials (Red Lighted as well)
Dial - 13.00
R/T - .287
60' - 2.006
330 - 5.552
1/8 - 8.460
MPH - 85.32
1000 - 10.981
1/4 - 13.137
MPH - 104.26
Granted it wasn't a completely stock transmission but it was by no means unattainable to anyone. There are write-ups on how to beef up an A-413 transmission out there if you look for them.
Turbo Caravan A-413 Rebuild Kit
4 Clutch Packs
Turbo Caravan Pumps
Dual B&M Tranny Coolers
Phantom Grip Limited Slip Differential
Forward Motion Racing Torqueconverter
SOHC Neon A-413
Cheetah Full Manual Valvebody
Here is a link to the Forward Motion website and the catalog page where they have the A-413 transmissions custom built to your application:

In response to strykr, You most likely have to 3 speed, which is mechanically controlled, so converting it to electronic controls would be not worth the expense and finding a way to do it is another major hurdle. If you have the A604 4 speed, then it would be far easier to adapt to another brand of electrically controlled shifting. (it's being done on Cherokees search for AW-4 ) But in the end the only thing you gain is the coolness of just toggling the shifter to change gears, which if that's what you're after by all means pursue it. It's your car after all. The A604 can be installed inplace of the A413, but it won't be easy. You would prolly need the '02 PCM and TCM, supporting wire harnesses and then the shifting mechanism of your choice.

There is a better one out there but I can't remember where I found it.
