Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Possible Automatic issue?

Post by Alex Kurdian » Fri Mar 13, 2009 8:34 am

Hi all
I have a question I hope someone can answer for me. I have a 2001 neon auto and its been perfect.
However, today I finished work went to car, started the car up and let her warm up and put it in drive, the car when I put it in drive
Seemed to jump a bit it wasn't a smooth gear change it was really rough.
I took off and to my surprisement the car stayed in 1st gear, it would not change.
I pulled over and didn't know what to do so I turned it off. I turned car back on a few seconds later
And drove off to see if there was any change. And yes car is back to normal. Changes gears fine.

Does anyone have any ideas what happened and should I be concerned?

Thanx

Have you done a transmission fluid flush since you bought the car??? This should help:

Do you by chance have the 41te 4 speed ATX?

They do list parts for them in the '01 parts manual, so there may be a few out there, especially export.

Did you put the gear selector in "D" the first time? Are you sure?

I remembered another possibility if you have the 3 speed: if the valve body has a sticking shuttle valve or some other cause not letting the clutch pak for 2nd gear to engage, it will not shift into any higer gear. If it does this again, but won't fix its self, pull the kick down off the TB. If it is a clutch pack problem, it should go from 1st to 3rd. I can't promise this will work on the 31te, but it does work on the older torqueflights (904/727)
Nothing like a 2 speed. I did this on a Plymouth Fury, and it worked for many years. You just had to be more careful in passing, because it won't kick down, and 1st at 60 mph + isn't a good thing.
