First ATX fluid change - few problems

Post by iskyfly » Fri May 01, 2009 9:26 pm

First of all the how-to for the ATX fluid replacement was a great help! :rockon:

Everything went as well as can be expected for a first timer doing it myself. I hit a few snags and would like some feedback;

-I hand tightened (using a 10mm socket and extension) all screws first per the directions that came with the filter. No problems. However, when it came time to torque to 80 inch pounds two of the screws just kept turning. I tried hand tightening these two screws again and they were snug and couldnt turn any further using just hand force. ???

-When removing the old filter there was barely any sign of an o-ring. Just a speck of orange on the threads. When I put in the new filter the new o-ring broke right in half. I removed the new filter and placed both halfs of the o-ring back over the opening and reinstalled the filter.

I have not driven the car after replacing the fluid. I did put a piece of newspaper underneath and will check for leaks tomorrow.

I am thinking that I will probably need to do a do-over. And if so, no problem, good practice. Is it safe to drive the 5 mile round trip to get another filter and more ATF+4 ? What can be done about the two screws?

One additional comment, the instructions that came with the filter said to use grease between the gasket and pan and specifically said not to use sealant, yet other people have posted here that they do use RTV. Why the discrepancy?

Thanks much!
