Im fixing to drop the engine and tranny together out of the bottom of the 00 neon auto. "seems to be the easiest way" and then jack the car up and slide the assembly out from under the car. my question is once the assembly is out of the car what is the easiest way of disconnecting the tranny from the engine? just do it on the ground? on the hoist? im gonna rebuild and i don't want my new engine rolled around on the ground trying to get it back together before it goes back in the car. iv searched around trying to find videos of someone accually pulling it out of the car. but iv yet to find anything.

All i have are chains and a chain motor hoist. got two sturdy poles in my yard and im gonna run a chain across that and hook the hoist to that.

so if anybody has any tips or know of some videos showing this that would be awesome. or if u would like to tell me a better way i will sure try that.

Once the engine/trans unit is out of the car and on the ground it's pretty simple. Just remove the bell housing bolts and pull it apart.

Bolting the engine and trans back together is easier when it's on the ground because you can line it up without much effort. Once it's in the car it becomes much more difficult with the small space to work with.

I haven't pulled mine out personally, but I've helped a few guys replace clutches before. Trying to line up the trans in the engine bay is a pain in the ass, it takes a few helpers to do it without any hassle.

yeah maybe it wont be such a big deal. i'm working by myself alot with no help so i was trying to find the most logical way of doing it.

Put something sold between the two post. A chain spanning the two will have a lot of leverage to pull them together.

cool ill def take that into consideration when pulling it. it wont be to much weight on it for long just enough to take pressure off the motor and tranny mounts and then drop it down to the ground. i did notice the guy next door to me has a cherry picker sitting outside his house so i may go over and try to rent or borrow that to make it a lil easier.

Do not use a chain between the 2 posts - it will sag, making the task that much more difficult.
Get a couple of 4x4s, and "stack" them, or, get three 2x6s, and lay them flat-to-flat, join with lag bolts, then stand them on edge. After that, you may want to stretch some guy wires leading away from the posts, and anchor them in the ground with some nice long stakes.

Or, you could build a basic A frame, which would probably be safer yet.

Or, just borrow your neighbor's cherry picker - he may let you use it for a case of beer
