5 speed question

Post by cbjones26 » Tue Sep 15, 2009 10:35 pm

all start off by saying im thinking its the clutch but not sure!, this is what the car is doing,

while shifting from 1-2 sometimes it wont go into 2nd and it will grind the gears( even if the clutch is to the floor) doesnt do it all the time, but is always while shifting from 1st to 2nd, doesnt do it in any other gear, doesnt do it while down shifting, is this my clutch going? or is there some kind of adjustment i can do? also this is on a 2000, and sometimes when i go to push the clutch in its like a lil stiff and it feels like a lil pop when i press on it!

If it's only one gear, then its not the clutch.

how about some sloppy shifter bushings...or bad synchro . . .? check the mtx fluid level.

I'd bet a syncro over a clutch.

the bushings looked fine when i installed the maddog sts i have, but then again i dont really know what they should look like, i know the one bushing that is closer to the driver side came off really easy the other one not so much, had to really pry that one off, how do i tell about the synchro? the fluid should be fine but ill check it in the am, the garage i bought the car from just put fluid in it, they changed the pinion gear ( the plastic part that runs the speedo) and i mean the one thats on differential.

If you double clutch and it works pretty good, or atleast better, its probably the syncro.

Double clutch: A method of shifting from back when tranmissions didn't have syncronizers in them. Leave one gear by pushing in the clutch and putting it in neutral, let out the clutch and give the gas a little blip, then push in the clutch and put the shifter in the next gear.

To fix a synchro you would have to drop the trans and pull it apart.

Did 2nd gear grind before you put the short shifter on?

You could always change to synchromesh fluid and see if that helps.

ya it did it before the short throw shifter, then it went away for a day or so, and now its doing it again! where is that fluid located ? im thinking when they dropped the tranny to change that pinion gear ring the didnt put it back together right, bc it didnt do that before they had the tranny apart

My car was doing the same thing, grinding a lot even though it felt like is was in gear...put in some new boogers and much better. Still shifts a little rough but I plan on changing the tranny fluid (almost 90K miles) and see if that helps. The bushing on the driver's side under the shifter was only half way on when I put in my new boogers...
