i recently have messed up my atx again... it no longer goes into reverse or neutral when the car is on.... i am a poor college kid so i have no hope of getting a new tranny. i have talked to a few people and they have said possible just a cable broke? i know nothing about transmissions. how would i go about checking this without taking it to a garage and paying hundreds of dollars to only diagnose the problem. if it is the tranny and it is a wreck would it be worth it for a 5 spd mtx swap?

To start with your last question first, one poor college kid to another, if my damn ATX has another major problem that costs more than a swap, or very close, I'll be swapping. Totally worth it IMO. MTX is easier to work on too.

To see the tranmssion cable, remove the battery, battery tray, and intake/airbox. You'll see it right there. Any codes (you don't have to have a CEL to have 'em)?

He probably won't have any codes because he has the 3 speed.

swap to a mtx.. ive replaced an atx and it was over $400, after the second one went i did my my swap for $210... and its a 3:94

alright i got the battery box and intake out and i can see the linkage to the tranny and everything is in-tact... does this mean i am just f*cked and it is internal?

Does it go into Park?
If it does, then I don't think it is the linkage.
You also said it is when the engine is running. So I take it that it will go forward regardless of the gear it is in.
I think the shifter would move freely, without the detents if the linkage is loose/broken.

the car will go into park and drive but it won't go into reverse or neutral. the shifter moves fine but when it is in neutral it moves forward and when it is in reverse it just revs up and doesnt move at all... when the car is in auxilery it will go into reverse and neutral... also when the enigne is running and i have it in reverse and i try to rev it, white smoke comes out the exhaust

Could be a valve body issue. There are no common clutches/bands for N and R. The reverse band welded to the drum will cause no Neutral, but then reverse should work. As for the white smoke in reverse only, I have no clue, as there isn't a vacuum line connected to the trans.

alright well i just finished taking out my subs, amp, infiniti speakers and alpine head unit to sell so hopefully that will help me out a little in funds so i can buy a manual and swap it in.. i know it is a lot of work but i am so tired of atx
