Getting "new" atx tranny, change fluid?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Getting "new" atx tranny, change fluid?

Post by Adionik » Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:09 pm

Well, as you all know, my SXT's tranny has been blown for some time. So I got a new one today. New as in 74k and new to this car

But it was $150 and it works!

So, at this mileage, i'm wondering if i should change the fluid or just leave it? I figured it might be a slightly bad idea...so i'd maybe install it and then worry about changing the oil if it its slipping later?

May as well change it. You are going to have it towed/flatbed to a trans shop/dealer anyhow. The 40/41te needs to have a quick learn proceedure done via the DRB Scan tool. This sets the TCM so it shifts properly without cooking the clutches. The speedo has to be programmed also, as the 4 speed uses the parking sprag for signal reference. Yor PCM should already be set, but if the ATX didnot come from a neon, then the gear ratio may not be the same, and the speedo will be off. This may screw with the shift points. Ain't technology great?

Or you can install it, and hope the clutch volumes, etc. from the old ATX are close enough that it works.

Personally I would spend the $ and have the ATX live a bit longer.

Wow whaaaaaaaaat? I'm getting this off another 2002 neon. I figured i could just bolt it up and reset the PCM...if that.

Possibly you can, I am just going from the FSM.

The TCM calculates how much fluid is used for each shift, etc. The quick learn proceedure is supposed to get everything to a state where it is adjusted to the ATX. I doubt the (speedometer) pinion proceedure will need done. If you can also get the TCM from the other '02, you should be golden.

At least it is an '02. NGC uses the PCM to control engine and ATX.

NOTE: If transaxle is being overhauled (clutch
and/or seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary
to perform the PCM/TCM Quick Learn Procedure.
(Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/POWERTRAIN/TRANSMISSION
CONTROL MODULE - STANDARD PROCEDURE

STANDARD PROCEDURE - PINION FACTOR
SETTING
NOTE: This procedure must be performed if the
PCM has been replaced with a NEW or replacement
unit. Failure to perform this procedure will result in
an inoperative or improperly calibrated speedometer.
The vehicle speed readings for the speedometer are
taken from the output speed sensor. The PCM must
be calibrated to the different combinations of equipment
(final drive and tires) available. Pinion Factor
allows the technician to set the Powertrain Control
Module initial setting so that the speedometer readings
will be correct. To properly read and/or reset the
Pinion Factor, it is necessary to use a DRBIIIt scan
tool.
(1) Plug the DRBIIIt scan tool into the diagnostic
connector located under the instrument panel.
(2) Select the Transmission menu.
(3) Select the Miscellaneous menu.
(4) Select Pinion Factor. Then follow the instructions
on the DRBIIIt scan tool screen.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - QUICK LEARN
PROCEDURE
The quick learn procedure requires the use of the
DRBIIIt scan tool. This program allows the PCM to
recalibrate itself. This will provide the best possible
transaxle operation.
NOTE: The quick learn procedure should be performed
if any of the following procedures are performed:
² Transaxle Assembly Replacement
² Powertrain Control Module Replacement
² Solenoid/Pressure Switch Assembly Replacement
² Clutch Plate and/or Seal Replacement
² Valve Body Replacement or Recondition
To perform the Quick Learn Procedure, the following
conditions must be met:
² The brakes must be applied
² The engine speed must be above 500 rpm
² The throttle angle (TPS) must be less than 3
degrees
² The shift lever position must stay until
prompted to shift to overdrive
² The shift lever position must stay in overdrive
after the Shift to Overdrive prompt until the
DRBIIIt indicates the procedure is complete
² The calculated oil temperature must be above
60° and below 200°
(1) Plug the DRBIIIt scan tool into the diagnostic
connector. The connector is located under the instrument
panel.
(2) Go to the Transmission screen.
(3) Go to the Miscellaneous screen.
(4) Select Quick Learn Procedure. Follow the
instructions of the DRBIIIt to perform the Quick
Learn Procedure.
