need help asap

Post by j-king » Sat Jan 09, 2010 4:05 pm

so not that long ago my girlfriend used my car and slid on snow/ice and hit a curb

so a weird ugly noise started coming from the front passenger side wheel when its rolling i got it checked and they had told me that it was my lower left control arm and i already replaced that and it strighted out the wheel but it still makes that ugly ass noise

so i am guessing its the wheel bearings or some shit like that

any thoughts would help kuz i am leaving to the salvage yard like in 30 mins so anything would help thanks

i'd check to see if anything is rubbing. It could be your wheel bearing.

Is it constant when you turn your wheels both ways?

Check to see if the wheel bearing has play. Sounds like a wheel bearing though.

A cv joint should get noisier the harder you turn it. (If it is making loud noises/badly damaged.) In the straight ahead position, it has the least movement. It only has to compensate for suspension height/travel.

How is the rim? Are the lug nuts tight? Maybe obvious things, but worth looking at.

Edit: If it is bad, you will need to break loose the axle nut, raise the car, remove the wheel, the tie rod end, the ball joint has to be removed from the knuckle. If sway equipped, both ends will need to be unbolted from the LCA. swing it down out of the way. After popping the BJ loose from the knuckle, you can then swing the strut/knuckle assy out enough to get the axle stub out of the knuckle/hub. Once it is free, you will need to hit the end near the transmission to knock the half shaft out. Either drain the trans or have a pan under to catch the fluid that will be pouring out. Install new/reman half shaft. Replace all the stuff in reverse order. top off trans fluid.

The wheel bearing is like $25 at auto zone plus what ever you are charged for pressing it in, but a cv joint I dont know. IMO I would do the wheel bearing first since like a majority of the time an impact like that causes the wheel bearing to go.

Generally these days you buy a reman halfshaft to get new CV joints. IDK if they even offer rebuild kits for CV joints anymore. It's not like they "bolt on" to the axleshaft.

All NAPA shows is a replacement boot/complete cv driveshaft.
