Weird sound only when reversing

Post by Johny » Mon Jul 05, 2010 2:51 am

Hey guys, I've recently come about this noise when I put the car into reverse. It seems to only happen when I'm in reverse, any ideas (it's an auto btw)? :)

Describe the noise maybe? Is it like a grinding, or does it make like a bark bark roof roof noise..

Or is it kind of a winding noise?

Pretty much what I was thinking. Thanks for completing my thoughts, Adam.

That "whirring" noise is usually only on MTX cars when backing up though.

It's pretty common on ATX cars as well. It's easy to miss though, so perhaps it's always been there and he is only recently noticing it.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, but no it doesn't sound like a winding sound like on MTX cars. It sounds like something is rattling, not really grinding.

What kind of a rattle? Have you checked to make sure your motor/trans mounts are good and your exhaust is still tight?

Does it happen all of the time when you reverse, or only when you hit the gas harder or with the wheels turned, etc?

Does it happen when you reverse in a straight line or when you're turning one way or another?

If it is also associated with turning it could be your CV joint.

Yeah, I've also noticed it when I was pulling into the drive way, I usually have to turn hard right to get into my parking spot. So yeah I guess I hear it when I turn the wheels, but also if im just reversing straight.

Haha oops I put R/T by accident :tardbang:

Does it only make the sound when you initially shift it into gear, then stop after a few seconds?

If so, it is normal solenoid noise.

Hmm, it seems like it keeps going. I havn't driven in reverse for longer than like 5 seconds, so I'll see if it stops a little later on.
