Throw Out bearing Question

Post by jrumann59 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 12:14 pm

I think my TO bearing is on the wait out. It chattered until yesterday when it really started chattering and smoking and then stopped adn is really quiet now. Is there a way to do the TO without dropping the whole tranny?

Unfortunately, no.

The input shaft must slide all the way clear of the clutch assy to remove the TOB. You will want to check the fingers on the pressure plate for wear also, as the TOB face may have worn them badly. You wouldn't want the new TOB to break through if they are worn that far. It would be an extreme case, but not impossible. Of course that would mean a new clutch assy...

Generally throw out bearings don't smoke, but friction linings do. Sounds like the clutch might be part of the issue.

There wasn't enough smoke for it to be that and it did it in and out of gear. And then went away.

Either way, he will know something when it is taken apart.

Hopefully there will be something visible.

Nope. My TO bearing has been giving me the chatter for a while now so it probably just needs to be replaced. I really do not want to do it. I hate doing work on the tranny in this car.
