sealer for tranmission pan?

Post by gcretro » Fri Feb 11, 2011 1:25 pm

I have an ambitious pan to change my transmission filter this weekend... (04 Neon SE)

I have the pro-king filter kit that comes with gasket. Do I need to put a sealer? What kind of sealer do I exactly need?. I see prices range from 3 bucks to 12 bucks or more.

I might also need to do the oil pan gasket... So a sealer that works for both will be great.

Chrysler recomends sealer for the trans pan...no gasket. If you are planning on trying your luck with that gasket, get some Hi-Tack gasket sealer.

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

as for the sealant you want RTV

for the oil pan, buy the recommended gasket, dont use sealer.

Search advance auto parts... found these two in the 5 to 7 bucks range.

1. Permatex Automatic Transmission RTV Sealant - 7 bucks.

2. Permatex Clear RTV Silicone Adhesive Sealant (I already have this one... the translucent silicone... is this going to work for tranny pan?)

Do NOT use the clear sealant. Use the ATF sealant since, well, you are sealing against ATF.

You are right, the FSM says to use an adhesive...

Weird.. the pro-king kit came with a gasket. Yet to open it and see if it's rubber or cork. Well another 6 bucks to get the trans RTV sealant.

"Clean the oil pan and magnet. Reinstall pan
using new Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant. Tighten
oil pan bolts to 19 N·m (165 in. lbs.)."

Gasket or gasket-maker. Personal preference. I've been running a gasket for 40,000+ miles with 0 leaks.
