31th info and vs. a-413

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

31th info and vs. a-413

Post by gtxtreme19 » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:54 pm

Ok guys I was going through some pm's the other day and found some info I had forgotten about on our 3 speed transmissions and comparing them to the a-413. Its good info and I don't take any credit for it but I figured its here if anyone wants to use it.

I'd like to make a street/strip car with an atx and the 31th doesn't seem to have much of a performance market. Any help?

GT Neon wrote:I have the transmission still but while I as inspecting it I found a bunch of aluminum chuncks near the speedo gear. I have already parted with the higher stall Forward Motion torque converter but everything else remains. What I have left might be good for a rebuild or parts since when I pulled the valvebody it didn't appear any of the aluminum chucks made it past the filter so the internals are most likely still good. Depending on how close you live to St. Louis, MO you are more then welcome to come by and see it and give me a price on it otherwise it is to heavy to ship.

The parts not only fit fine they held the power of a 2.4L turbo pushing 19psi of boost 350hp/375wtrq. Shortly after pushing that kind of power the turbo died. I suspect the housing might be trashed where the differential sits but the internal parts should have been saved from the damage so I would bet they are still in good shape.

Naturally the bell housing will be different if it is mated to 2.2. The valve body is going to be a little different, depending on whether or not the TC lock up is hydraulic, or electric. But I wouldn't hold my breath as to whether the internals are 100% interchangeable.
FWIW wrote:The A404 was strengthened to become the A413 (later 31TH) in 1981. This was used with Chrysler's 2.2 L and 2.5 L K-car engines. It was available both with and without a lockup torque converter. This transmission was also used in the Dodge Neon from 1995-2001. The A413 is broadly similar in concept to Ford's ATX three-speed unit.

They were used in everything 4 cyl/ ATX, not just the K cars. N/A or boosted it didn't matter. but as boost goes, it was only the Turbo I cars. Anything with an intercooler got an MTX.

There was also a version in the mini vans with the V6.

But I remember reading somewhere that they made small changes here and there that made swapping parts between years a challenge. It would be nice if the turbo internals are compatible with the neon versions.

I'm sure there were some Turbo I Daytona's, and Shadows that were pumping out more than the rated 145 hp from the factory, and those A413's held up fine. They really were pretty durable, the TC just doesn't like super high RPM's. They tend to come apart inside.

Edit: I think as far as valve bodies, they are pretty much interchangeable, just the TC lock up might not work. But anything as far as shift kits would work. The RMVB is a direct fit between them, so I can't see why not.
