Stock axles power threshold?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Stock axles power threshold?

Post by haseebgill12 » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:54 pm

Hey guys
I've been looking around but I can't really find the information I am looking for.
I am going boost soon, so I was wondering how much abuse (HP/Torque) can the stock axles on a 2gn Neon handle .........reliably?

NiteHawk recommended RSS stage 3's.......but how much abuse can the stocker's handle before i NEED after market axles?

Unfortunately there is no magic HP/TQ number that these axles break at. I've seen people push 200+ whp through them without issue, and I've seen people with nearly stock engines snap them. Bottom line is, if you spend the money to make that kind of power, what's a few hundred more for upgraded axles? Even if the stock ones can handle it, the one day they don't and you're stranded you'll wish you were better prepared.

Last time I drove my car, I had the PT/shadow axles in it. Call them stage 1 mopar axles. Around 500whp, and they weren't the weakest link.
ASP - First NGC SOHC in the 13s and the 12s. First SOHC neon over 500whp. First NGC Neon on MS.

most of the time wheel hop kills axles avoid it and they should hold up

Yeah, if you're not hitting the drag strip with slicks and 20psi running through your 3076....you'll be fine on the stock axles for quite a while.

it will never see a drag strip. Yeah i was just wondering how the axles would hold on the stock bottom end. But i guess when the bottom end is built i have no choice but to upgrade if i want to shoot for around 400 horses?

Really, not necessarily. It all depends on how you drive it. If you never launch the car hard, and always just roll into the power when you're already moving, the stock axles would still be fine. It's all about energy. Or if you do launch the car, smooth wheel spin isn';t going to kill them either. Wheel hop, or hooking real hard with slicks or track tires is what will break one.
