I need a how-to

Post by superdan » Tue Jun 14, 2011 2:03 pm

I am replacing the axles boots and I wanted a how-to, to guide me through doing the process so I know that I did everything right. I think I need a special crimping tool which I looked at AZ and advanced and I didnt see that they carried. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Step 1 - Buy replacement axles

Step 2 - Install axles and save yourself a lot of time and grief. The extra bit of money spent is worth the peace of mind knowing that all of the components are new. A/M new axles are available for less than $100 per side.

Seriously though, if you need info about the CV boot clamp tool, it will matter what kind of clamps you are using.

KD 3955 works with this kind of boot clamp...

^I agree, why go through so much trouble when reman warranted axles are so cheap?

Are the reman axles as good quality as the OEM?

Many times, yes. The reman axles that Chrysler sells are rebuilt by A1 Cardone which is one of the most popular brands you can find. One of our local part stores sells DSS axles which are new axles for the price of reman ones. The quaility seems just as good as the factory stuff.

While it's hard to say if the metal quality used in the joints or the shaft themselves will be as good or not, most axles come with a much better warranty than the Chrysler new parts (which is 12 months). Some are lifetime. So if you break one you aren't out any money, just the time it takes to install them...which isn't much.

I guess it depends where you get them from.

I have heard 'mixed' reviews of reman axles from AutoStoned.
I know a friend who put a remanufactured axle from AutoStoned on one of his Neons.
It broke after a couple of months of use..... A 'post-mortem' inspection, revealed that one of the CV's were BLUED from heat. :?
Assuming that he didn't do something stooopid with his car, ( like drive for hours and hours with a torn boot and no CV grease ?? Which he wouldn't do)... whoever rebuilt them, should not have re-used those parts.

I have also read other reports, about folks who have had 'fitment' problems with good ol' AutoStoned reman axles.
They must be using a Low-Rent, cheap Third-World outfit for supplying rebuilds. I don't care if they are lifetime warranty or not.

You could, of course, also 'source' some axles from a junkyard, or from someone here, who is parting out.

my advice, get a junkyard oem axle. I have had far better luck with 150,000km+ used stock axles, then i have with Brand New fenco axles. Guy at the partstore told me they usually just clean, grease and reassemble the old cores they get. for 25-40 dollars its way cheaper too. Had two reman'd Fenco axles tear apart at the outer cv, one on my neon, one on my friends shadow. less then 1000km on both of them since purchased.

Yeah, I have heard and read too many horror stories about the reman'd ricerzone axles which is why I originally decided to just replace the boots on the OEM axles I already have. The lifetime warranty is awesome and all but I dont want to be changing the axles a month from now because they broke or the boots ripped.

GSP axles are supposed to be good for SRT's. Thats what I will be getting from Advanced when they are back in stock. They are not a reman axle, they are a new axle.

I will NEVER buy a reman chrysler axle again. Went through three and had nothing but problems.

I've been riding on a NAPA replacement passenger side axle for about 8-10 months now, works great. I think it had a 1 year or 3 year warranty, I can't remember.

Anyone know if the MasterPro® Select CV - CV Axle Shafts are good quality? I don't really trust Autozone's replacement parts (have had numerous of problems with previous parts for previous cars). This is sold by O'Reilly's.

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... axle+shaft

Looks like they're brand new and not reman either. I'll never in my damned life buy refurb or reman.. mechanical or electrical.

Getting a knock kind of sound.. sounds like it more towards the center of the car than it is closer to the wheel. The tempo of the knock goes with the speed of the wheels. So the faster I go the faster the knock the slower I go the slower. Sooo I'll just replace both axles. <_<;

I just need to know of a legitimate company that makes great quality (materials) axels for our cars.

Hell I'd even get SRT's CV axles if I knew that they were a direct fit, I'm sure they're built tougher to endure the power of the SRTs vs Neons
