Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 oil in mtx trans

Post by g_force58 » Wed Oct 05, 2011 12:33 pm

I am a bit confused about the ues of Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 in our manual trans. Was on Howell's website and they made a remark that it had to be fortified with HDDP and that the additive info was on the bottle label. I have perused said label until my eyes crossed and can find no inference to said additive. Am I wrong, or is the additive already in the oil since all the label says is it reduces wear? does anyone here run this oil in their trans?

Thanks Justin, your help is welcome. Thought I was right but wasn't for sure. Didn't want to do something that would destroy the trans.

You are looking for ZDDP, not HDDP.

Now I know why I randomly started thinking about this today...

And I have no immediate plans of using it.

Mobil 1 did not "toast" your trans in two weeks. Sorry, something else is/was wrong with your trans.

It does if the plug wasn't put back in it.

:laughing3:

I've been running Mobil 1 10w-30 HM for about a couple months. It shifts a lot better than it had with ATF, and even before that. I'm going to be using that as MTX fluid every year, since it'd be a cheap way to keep the transmission from trashing.

Or the gasket leaked. Mine had a minor drip for a few weeks until it re seated. I wasn't paying $28 for a new one. A quart of oil is cheaper.

im not going to get in the habit of defending my post here, I stated MY experience using m1 hm. My 2004 R/t only has 81,xxx miles, trans was fine until the swap. I was just in there when I replaced the clutch and TOB it was in immaculate condition inside no gauling anywhere. Im pretty sure the plug was in(I can't believe this came from a member with vendor status), why does everyone on this forum automatically assumes anyone with a low post count is a moron? Was i redirected to the srt forum, cause I thought I was in the 2gn forum.

Because we are smart enough to know that unless you put 100,000+ miles on your trans in two weeks that it didn't ruin it. You could have ran gear old, motor oil, just about any oil for two weeks and not have a toast transmission yet. And when you changed the clutch, you split the case to see what the inside looked like?

Not to mention you are the only case of someone having catastrophic results from running it, and in only two weeks...

Whats broken just out of curiousity?

Also, you say everything looked to be in good shape inside the trans? did you open the gearcase? or are you talking about inside the bellhousing.

[quote="heydockyle" And when you changed the clutch, you split the case to see what the inside looked like?[/quote]. No, not for the clutch and TOB but for the quaife differential I did.

I was just being a joker, first of all. And second of all, if I was calling you a moron for doing it, I have to call myself a moron twice. The first time was my own car, and the second was a customer car. Luckily, I only got half a block down in the customer car before I realized it and no harm was done.

If the diff wasn't shimmed 100% correctly, that may have done the job. Not saying you did it wrong, but if you just re used the existing shims, yeah, it could toast things in short order.

Ah you left that out. The diff changes everything, it's almost certainly an install problem. As stated above the M1 oil could not have caused failure in that amount of time, even if it was the wrong stuff. A few people have been running it for years with no sign of issue. Did you open the trans up and have a look? Heck while we're at it, was the clutch installed right?

Probably could run moose piss for two weeks and it would live.

Not deer piss though, that's too thin.

The risk of using Moose piss is, if your neon is female, it may try to trample others into the ground if it feels it's owner is threatened.
