Tranny mount?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Tranny mount?

Post by Zarvox » Thu May 03, 2012 5:11 pm

My 2001 Neon recently began to shake around 90 km/h (55 mph).
I'm sure it's not the wheels because this shaking is not on the steering wheel but the whole font of the car.
Could this be because of the transmission mount? (someone said that it could be) The tranny is automatic.
Any helpful ideas what to check?

Yeah, I don't think a bad trans mount by itself would make the whole front end shake. You would notice that more when shifting from forward to reverse, or letting off the gas, getting back on the gas. Not as much as bad torque struts, but it would be there if it was totally shot. .

I don't think it can get the engine transaxle alignment out enough to make the cv joints go wack. They can take some serious misalignment. The transaxle would have to be resting on the crossmember to piss them off. And then there would be the other obvious issues.

And just because you can't feel it in the steering wheel, doesn't mean it isn't a tire. I would try swapping the fronts/rears just to be sure. It is the cheapest option.

I failed to mention that it occurs usually when I press the gas, if I let it off, it goes away.
And I recently changed the wheels and tires, so that's not the problem. (I also had the wheel issue earlier and it feels totally different)

Mine was behaving like yours is and it had been the left cv-axles inner (trany-side) bearing.

Yes, exactly.
The original suspect (trans mount) was in good condition, but I replaced each mount, because all the other ones were in quite bad shape.
Unfortunately it did not resolve the problem...

Don't mind to replace the mounts, especially if they are the originals.
It made my whole ride smoother.
At least you don't have to pay that much for the shipping as I had to... ](*,)

update: main motor mount in combination with removing and re-aligning both torque struts fixed this issue
