Replacing driveshafts ... Tranny oil?!
Replacing driveshafts ... Tranny oil?!
Sa little background ... My car failed inspection on inner CV boot on LHS (driver side for you ... Passenger for me)
I had a brand new shaft handy I got on EBay a few months back do decided to change the shaft, I read the Haynes manual and it says that is is not necessary to drain the tranny and also the HT on here doesn't mention it either, yet when I pulled the shaft the entire contents of my tranny went all over the floor ...
Something I did wrong or something I've overlooked ....

Yea, I always drain the trans, and if the fluid is pretty fresh, I'll put it right back in when I'm done.

Yours is probably the Chrysler fluid #4874465 .
Redline MTL will work if it is available over there, and probably cost less than the Mopar stuff.

well i remember when i put the oil in a couple years ago it was bright red and now its a little black so im gonna change it.
ive done some reasearch online and some places recommend:
Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90
what do you think?
its a few $ per bottle cheaper than the redline MTL

Too thick. I use Mobil1 high mileage motor oil and it's great. Slides right into the next gear off 9k redline.

Maybe Pennzoil synchromesh? That's what I've been using, it works pretty well.
So many neons so little time.

I would just go with the Redline, if it is available. You are only buying three liters/quarts.
The Redline MTL is rated at 75w90 IIRC, but it flows fairly well, and I have not had any cold weather issues with it for the past three years.
I have close to 200,000 miles on this MTX, and can't complain too much. If the lube was going to cause a problem, it should have by now.

Mobil 1 High mileage 10w30 or 5w30 (cold places) synthetic engine oil.
I was under impression that synthetic oil was bad for our trannies as well?
Currently it contains 1100 PPM of zinc it seems and 1000 ppm for phosphorus.
But don't street race..!!??If the parts car is cleaner rust wise than your car, swap the inner dash panels (VIN) and use the parts car with your title.

AFAIK, all factory fill in neon transaxles is synthetic.
While the factory 1995 through 2001/2002? stuff is plenty adequate, the bad part is the price.
Mopar Type MS-9417 PN 4874465 $21.60/quart

Good thing I have more than a case of that left over from the dealershipoccasional demons wrote:AFAIK, all factory fill in neon transaxles is synthetic.

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...
$20 a quart is a tad excessive for a bottom line car. I paid $7 a quart at honda for an 02 civic the other day for a customers car and it only takes 1.6 qts....
Surprised everyone goes anal just over the zinc, the phosphorous is important in metal to metal contact areas as well.
