Maybe the differential pin came loose, I know that can cause all kinds of damage. Ouch, that really sucks.

Seeing how the diff pin and spider gears are missing, I'd say you were right.
Actually in the last picture, you can see the other side gear and one of the spider gears. That's not where they belong.

Yeah I've only seen the diff pin in pictures, but it was usually still attached to an intact transmission.

yeah... diff pins. those bastards make awesome projectiles at 5000 rpm!

If your diff is spinning at 5000 rpms, you'd be going over 300 mph on 22" tall tires.
The diff spins only about 2000 rpms at 7k in 4th gear on a 3.55, and that's well over 100 mph.

At 80 mph, that had to have some serious pucker factor. Especialy when it is a totally unexpected event.
Hopefully no one was close behind you.

Neon rides up nicely
installed a transmissions from Chrysler Neon CS (1gen 1998), everything fits perfectly
