Estimate transmission replace cost?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Estimate transmission replace cost?

Post by Black_on_Black_Neon » Tue May 06, 2014 10:48 am

I just bought an 02 Neon R/T, Sold to me because the previou owner did not take care of it, and the transmission is griding in 2nd and 4th, and will not catch at all in 3rd( I think its synchros as well). Im worndering first of all are there ant miricle fluids to put in there?

If not how much does a transmission replace usually run for an 02 neon 5 speed? Im not picky and ill take the cheaper more common transmission. I just need some insight.

You can get a used, known good transmissing for under $200. Labor isn't difficult, just heavy and awkward. Guys on here can swap in parking lots in 2 hours. I've done it multiple times with minimal tools and only takes me 1/2 day.

So $200.

'01 PT Cruiser is the same as what you have. '02 PT is the same FD, but the 5th gear is better suited for highway use.

'03 to '05 neons may have a bit too tall of a 5th for your liking. Unless you do a 2.4 swap, then It is actually pretty nice...

Or you can get one from me, whatever gearing you want, with all new seals and completely gone through for $550 shipped, and you send me your busted one.

You can.

Do you have a hydraulic press, at least 20 ton?

Do you have a variety of snap ring pliers? Snap rings with holes in the end and snap rings with just a tapered end.

Do you have feeler gauges?

Here's what is involved in changing synchros:

The black fixture everything is held on is anywhere from $120 used to $400 new. I wouldn't wanna take one apart without it.

And here's what they look like when I'm done with them:

2-3x what Chipdogg offered you. With a longer turnaround, probably.

if they can do it at all given the lack of parts available anymore. chip has a lot of parts hoarded so he is able to do them.

Yup, I have at least 20 cores. Plus I currently have enough NIB seals, bearings, diff pins and saver tabs in stock to do 5 transmissions. More if I had more of the damn input shaft seal/bearing/TOB snouts!
