I'll post this here too since the old turbo Dodge guys are using the Neon OBX:

interesting read, you also still need to modify your side gears for the axle clips jonny, def dont install it untill you do.

No clips on the old turbo cars, thankfully. The spring loading of the inner joint is all that's needed to keep everything together.r/tguy02 wrote:interesting read, you also still need to modify your side gears for the axle clips jonny, def dont install it untill you do.
I contacted Cory over at Modern Performance to see if he knows anything. I got mine at Turbos Unleashed last year, but I know Modern sells them too. I've emailed OBX 3 times already with no response .

i bought mine back in 2010 and it is like the LH set of gears so this isnt something really recent either...
bought mine new off of ebay, cant remember the sellers name though.
oddly i just modified an obx for a friend and his is like the RH set, but its hard to say where it came from because its passed through so many hands.

also johnny i wanted to make note that my friends OBX (that was made properly) was used before i ever modified it (my guess they never used axle clips) and now that i understand how it should function i will say that the outside of the side gears (towards the housing) def showed signs of obvious wear so they were def being forced out not in. the bellville washers hardly had any signs of wear, just a tiny bit of shiny area where they contacted the other washers next to it while spinning. So your theory is def correct.
as for my own OBX i never did get to use it. its now owned by someone else that has a dirt circle track car. but he did tell me after he installed it that it worked fine, but i have a feeling that the washers in it are taking a hell of a beating kinda glad i sold it now...
as others said in the thread it will continue to function its just going to put undue stress on the star wheel and bellville washers instead of the case.
If you want any pics of the used obx that was made properly to illustrate the wear patterns LMK as i'll open it up and snap a few pics

Hey chipdogg, wanna sell me those older gears in the picture? This sucks because the small helicals can be switched around no problem. They're all the same except for the direction of the teeth. I'm almost positive I can just throw new sun gears in mine, double-check the preload on the washers, and be on my way. But because of this, I've resorted to tossing my extra transmission into the Daytona until I've got a solution I'm comfortable with.
Lots of developments in the thread linked above. Somebody cracked open a Quaife and verified that the direction of those gears match the direction of the older OBXs, not the new ones.

"older" being a relative term, we're talking a difference of a couple years, maybe even less between when they were made right and when they started churning out the wrong ones.

Right, I was referring to the older of the two sets appearing in his photo.
I am very curious to see exactly when the switch happened. The oldest one I've heard of with the wrong gears is from early 2012. I'm not sure how new I've seen with the correct ones.
