Can you swap a 2.4L MTX T850 into a 2.0L Neon SXT ATX?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Can you swap a 2.4L MTX T850 into a 2.0L Neon SXT ATX?

Post by 03SXTNeon » Wed May 14, 2014 2:44 pm

Okay so I am planning on doing an MTX Swap into my 03 SXT that has an ATX. If I am going to do this swap I want to get the best one I can to make it worth it! So I need to know if I can swap an MTX from a 2.4L SRT4 into my car? If so will the write up on the ATX to MTX work for this application?

I am looking to do this ASAP so any help and advice you can give me would be very much appreciated... Thanks for your time!

Physically, you can, although there aren't any benefits to it. That trans is pretty dang heavy. Plus you'll need an SRT flywheel and clutch since it's a different bell housing. That changes your axles to SRT axles, which could potentially mean you'll need SRT hubs, brakes, MC, brake booster, and maybe even the steering rack.

Sounds like much more of a hassle than it's worth. What's making you want the T850 over a T350HD?

Honestly I wasn't sure which one was better for quick shifts and a lot of HP. So the 350HD is just as good if not better than the 850? I plan on doing a magnum SOHC turbo build on my car as soon as the current engine dies so I am just trying to find the best match for this build. I'm a shade tree mechanic and have only been into neons for the past 7 months after I was given my current car by a family member. So I'm still trying to figure and map out everything for this cars build up.

You also need the T2.4 block, or the adapter currently offered on the .org to use the SRT equal length half shafts. There is no place on the 2.0 block to mount the carrier bearing.

I just know that it isn't as simple as picking a trans and using it. There are several things, including what OD offered, that need to be changed per trans choice.

I also know there are stickied threads regarding 3rd gear grinds and aftermarket fixes for T850s while the T350 hasn't got a "common" problem (01-05 anyhow) and Chipdogg here can rebuild them with his pinky toes, eyes shut while getting a handy from Gramps.

I dunno, Gramps squealed like a little girl when he used my air tools at my meet. Not sure what sounds he'd make when he got his hands on my real tool!

About as quick as we let the dirty handshake deny go!

And yes, it'll work with the 2.4L turbo. Lots of people use it with 2.4's.

I won't need an adapter for the t350hd to work with the 2.4l turbo? Like someone was saying in an earlier post that I would need one if I was going to use the t850 with a 2.0l so it won't need one to do the reverse?

You do not need an adapter to bolt either to either engine. You will only need to use a N/A style clutch with the t350.

Yeah, you just need to match the clutch and flywheel to the trans, not the motor.

So if I'm using an n/a style clutch that will be able to handle the turbo 2.4l setup I plan on running?

Not much in the way of stock replacements, no. But something for high performance use will do the job.

You can put an N/A clutch (T350) in the T850 bell housing, if you were sticking with an N/A engine, but you cannot put a T850 clutch into the T350 bell housing. T850 flywheels, etc have been modified to work in the smaller bellhousing, but with aftermarket N/A sized clutches available that will handle more than the stock SRT clutch, there isn't much point in going that route anymore.

But if you put a t350 against a 2.4, you can use any clutch designed for a Neon, 2.0 or 2.4. They clutch has no idea what engine it's on. The flexplate is the same for the 2 engines, as is the bellhousing bolt pattern.
