The answer is no. Anything 2002 or older will not run or work in a 2003+ Neon. You may be able to make bits and mechanical pieces work, but certainly not the entire motor itself.

If you aren't 100% sure, don't offer misinformation. They are 99% the same except one sensor, yes. But that sensor is the crankshaft sensor, which is relocated and also has a different trigger wheel pattern, which makes it incompatible. 2003-2005 must stic, to that year range engine.

There are also variations to the answer, since the question wasn't 100% specific.

To be emissions legal/Plug and Play: No

For off road use, and spending a chunk of cash on stand alone engine management, a bit of wiring, or a bunch of wiring and using the PCM from an earlier year: Yes

Is that feasible in most cases? No, a lot of expense and/or hassle for in most cases a "good deal".

The 2003 to 2010 (2.4)crank signal is also more stable, so the NGC engines are the better option as far as that goes.

With the availability of ppl that can flash NGC pcm's, a 2003 up in a 2002 older is the more worthwhile endeavor. You have engines made through 2010 as a replacement source. As the years click by, that will become a bit of an advantage.
