Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Outer cv boot question

Post by renegade83 » Fri Aug 08, 2014 4:56 pm

How hard is it to change? Mine has been leaking and I need to do something about it while the cv joint is still good.

I've changed one on my four wheeler before I'd imagine it can't be too much different.

not too bad, its just a case of getting the CV joint off of the axle, i think there is one of those plastic spring clips

I had a leaking cv outer boot
After doing some pricing it can out cheaper to replace the whole axle
IIRC you have to remove the whole axle to get the cv boot off
then put in on a bench vice
remove the boot
grease the hub
install your new boot
and i think you'll need a special tool for the metal strap
If the boot is leaking there's probably dirt in there anyways
so you'd be safer replacing the axle
Advance auto parts has a 30% off coupon
comes up to $40 i think for the axle
