Replacing my PT clutch with an SRT-4 clutch

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Replacing my PT clutch with an SRT-4 clutch

Post by Pimp_Daddy_Patty » Sun Nov 09, 2014 10:59 am

I'm getting ready to swap out my 2.0 turbo engine from a 2.4 with a 50 trim. My current unknown mileage PT clutch started slipping towards the end of summer after running 14 psi for months. I intend to use a turned down SRT-4 clutch in my hydraulic T350.

Does anyone around here have personal experience with this setup? I used an srt clutch in a 1gn with the cable setup many times and really didn't like the feeling of stepping on a wet towel every time I pushed the clutch pedal down. Is the hydraulic setup any better than cable?

Nope. The biggest factor IMHO, is the pressure plate. Personally I don't see a huge difference between the cable and hydro general feel. What I have found is the clutch assy is what either gives you good or bad feedback.

The Stratus 2.7 clutch I have is worlds better on feel than the Banhoff stage 1. At least you know that the Stratus clutch is hooking, and when. The Banhoff, is like driving with a numb leg. You don't know if it is actually gripping or not. Both are 3.55 MTX's.

The Stratus is in the cable actuated, and the Banhoff is in the hydro. BUT the Banhoff was in the cable set up first, and I can tell you it was no different, even with the advantage of 3.94 gears. I think a wet towel would be an improvement, it is more like jello.

I have never driven an SRT, So I couldn't tell you how it compares to the Stratus 2.7 pressure plate on pedal feedback. The 2.7 takes much more effort to push than a regular neon clutch. But it is also not a killer for city driving.

2.7 clutches are getting a bit rare now. Not seeing any online and buy local will cost me $500+.

The SRT-4 is as normal to drive as a stock neon. I have found the SRT clutch to be too stiff in a 1gn.

There is a 2.7 clutch on ebay right now...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SACHS-K70296-01 ... 19&vxp=mtr

Also Adam Lepole is selling a turned down SRT clutch with 21,000 miles on 2gn FB page for $200 + shipping

That 2.7 clutch on Ebay does not ship to Canada.

I have access to an SRT clutch locally for $240 without shipping.

WTZ FTW on the .org is also selling a used 2.7 for a decent price. He may ship to Canada. The clutch is going to feel just as stiff in a regular 2gn as it does for a 1gn. Like I said, I can tell no difference between my '99 and my '01 with the same clutch assy.

Maybe if you use the SRT pedal, that might make a difference? Other than that, the master and slave cylinders might be different sizes which will affect both effort, and travel.

But if you thought the SRT assy was too stiff in a 1gn, it will be no different in a non SRT 2gn. Unless the 1gn's cable was binding...

I think my biggest issue was the clutch dragging due to the adjustor not being completely solid. I will attempt the srt cluch anyway and see how well it works.

Worst case scenario, I'll have to bite the bullet and spend the money on a real aftermarket clutch.......or give the Getrag G288 a shot. I have the trans, pedals driveshafts and everything needed to convert except for the clutch which is $600 due to me not having the required flywheel for it.

I've got a line on a Clutchmasters Stage 4 for $250. I might jump on that one. Just gotta come up with the money. I am doing a 5.0 swap in my ranger in a week so I spent all my spare change on that project.
