2000 ATX transmission into a 2003 ATX

Post by DiggyP586 » Fri Dec 12, 2014 9:32 pm

Is it possible to take a transmission out of a 2000 neon (Atx) and put it into a 2003? Im talking about fitment and electronics, I have a 2000 with a blown motor and a chance to get a 2003 with a bad third gear. Any input would be great.

You will have some issues to figure out. It will bolt into place, as long as you use the 31th mount.

The electronics are what's going to be the biggest issue. The 2003 PCM will be throwing codes from the missing sensors that the 40te has.

You could have an MTX PCM flashed to your VIN/SKIM and then you will only have the torque converter lock up to figure out. You could just skip the lock up, but you will get even worse fuel mileage, and may need an auxiliary cooler due to the TC not being locked.

You have to figure out which is better: The hassle/expense of getting the 31th to work, or just having the 40te rebuilt, or replacing it with a good used 40te. IMHO, getting a 41te/40te that is in good shape is the better of the two choices.

Well, there is just 2.4 swapping the 2000 also...

That's kinda what I figured ughhh. On the other hand I'll just have to be on the look out for a 40te or. 41te that's used or rebuild mine. My goal is to have lest than 1400 into buying and fixing the transmission on the 03 that way it's somewhat worth it. But say if I got the 41te do I need to have a different PCM or anything to run it on the 2003 that had a 40te. I guess my question is what are the differences between the 40te and 41te and will they both work in the 2003 because I don't feel like messing with the 31th or any trans that just won't bolt up and work, I already have my 2000 srt swap to do those kinda things too I want a reliable car lol. But just as a through I could just not hook up the trans to the PCM and use a standalone TCM on the 31 in theory right?

The 31th is not electrically controlled. Just the TC lock up. There is no TCM for it.

The 41te is basically the same as the 40te, just an extra clutch in the drum. You may need to use the 40te solenoid pack on a 41te if the electrical connector is different. Or you could have the 40te rebuilt using the 41te clutch drum.

41te's are going to be harder to find than 40te's. Only 2002 domestic neons had them, and Turbo PT cruisers. You may find them in N/A PT's too, but I think they even used the 40te in those too.
