I need help fast, car doesn't idle right with new engine

Post by playboy2k4 » Fri Mar 09, 2007 8:33 pm

Hey guys , as most of yall know I just put a built engine in my car to go along with my turbo setup. Well, last night I tried to crank it up for the first time and when I did it was going haywire so I just figured it was because it was running rich but it wouldn't stay cranked. It's really bad at low RPM and gets a little better as I revv it. You have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it cranked. I tried to tune the rrfpr a little but it didn't help. So what do you guys think ? Maybe the cam timing is off or something . I need some good feedback guys because if it doesn't work out this time I am done with it and i'm going to get rid of it.

Are you sure that all the plugs are firing? I took out one of my spark plug wires and it smelled really really rich, and it was shaking pretty bad.

I'm pretty sure all the plugs are firing and I don't think it's a boost leak

First off, give me a layout of your fuel system, from the tank to the injectors to the FMU to the return line. What is your base pressure? Do you even have a fuel pressure gauge installed measuring the pressure? could be fuel starvation at the moment because of a kinked line. There is a myraid of options. Process of elimination my friend. Your turn...

First, I want to say I love your avatar that shit is funny as hell lol.
Alright as far as my fuel setup I have the walbro 255 in the tank, then the begi to the stage 0 srt injectors and you're right I don't have a fuel pressure guage. I should'nt be a kinked line as a matter of fact i'm sure its not a kinked line because the line that' before the begi is only about 2 inches long and be.fore that is the stock regulator which has the metal lines and after the begi it goes to the fuel rail which is only about 10" long. What i was thinking it may be is timing. I don't know anything about that, but can that be one of the problems if not the problem. do you have to mess with the timing when you install a new cam? also on my narrowband it's saying that i'm running rich. And yes I do have a wideband but I can't use it at the moment because my o2 bung was welded in the wrong place and there is no room to screw the o2 sensor into it. So now you can get an idea of where i'm at. your turn lol

LOL, thanks man. A friend of mine actually made that for me. If I'm not mistaken, your Begi unit should be AFTER the fuel rail. This is how your set up should be

Tank-->Fuel pump-->Spool Boy Mod-->Feul Rail + Injectors-->BEGI unit-->Return line feeding back into the tank.

I don't have the spoolboy mod or a return line is that a problem? I thought that part was optional. And why would the Begi come after the fuel rail when it's supplying the fuel in boost?

because your limiting fuel to the fuel rail when you put it in front. You want it after the fuel rail to have a continous pressure going to your injectors instead a restriction. When in boost, the begi unit will open according to the boost signal given and allow more fuel to pass to the injectors and not back up the fuel system. The fuel pump is what supplies the fuel rail, not the BEGI unit. You also need a return line to enable you to have enough fuel. The upgraded pump is flowing twice as much as stock...and the FMU can't always hold the pressure accordingly...so it needs to go back to the tank. Hope this helps, keep us updated.

Thats the how its suppose to set up...

Mines setup is pretty much the same....

Spoolboy modded cansistor -> to fuel rail -> to begi unit -> to return line -> back to the tank

You will either need a fuel pressure gauge or the Wideband installed to set you idle pressure... Your idle pressure as of now is way too low thats why you have to hold the gas to keep her on...

*Remember the Big Screw in the Middle is for adjusting for idle pressure and the Needle Valve to is adjust boost pressure...*

Lemme go outside and take some pics of my setup up close...

O yea sorrry bout yesterday bro... Got caught up pulling tile up at a friends house..

Tile is fun....about to do some in our batroom...
I need to pick up a BEGI unit as well. This Vortech works wonders, but I'd like adjustability with the turn of a knob or needle.

So my whole fuel setup is basically wrong huh lol  figures because I left it the same way the damn shadetree mechanic installed it and thats probably the reason my engine got messed up in the first place :beatstick: Hey I want to thank you guys for helping me because if it weren't for yall i'd be lost. Now back to this spoolboy modd i've heard of it but I don't know what it is exactly, so fill me in. And yes lots of pics please.

Be sure to use all the parts listed and don't use cheap, home depot stuff. Do it right the first time. I didn't and ended up leaking gasoline for a couple days.
