Internal Wastgate vs External ?

Post by rannox » Tue Apr 17, 2007 8:06 pm

So I know with internals its obviosly less free flowing, but is there a big difference?

Its seems to be slighly cheaper to get a setup with an internal wasgate.

Also is it harder to work on a trubo with an internal wastgate if something goes out? (im guessing yes)

Id rather spend a little more to help when repairs come into play.

Any experience in this department?

You can run more boost safely with an XWG then an IWG, there for making more HP. They do tend to cost more though. What you need to decide is how much power you want to make, then choose a turbo for your needs. For a DD, I'd go with an IWG just to make your life easier.

yeah internal is really easy to deal with. and actually as far as anything inside breaking, theres really not much in there that can break. All it is, is a hinged "Flap" thats controlled by the actuator. If your pushing relatively low levels of boost go internal. If your going to to higher then you may want to consider an external.

Any idea how much boost your planning yet?

keep it internally waste gated with a manual boost controller. I'm running 7 psi with a halman mbc (manual boost controller) and I don't spike as much as I did without it. External is nice, but not need IMO for low boost apps.

I'm porting my internal gate tomorrow. Boost creep sucks when you're on a stock motor. But when I finish compiling the parts to build the motor, I'll be tossing an external gate on. Pretty much a necessity when you have a wide-open exhaust.
