sohc t3 log or srt turbo setup

Post by NyNeon0813 » Wed Mar 06, 2013 12:49 am

So I'm debating which i should go with. Found a sohc log with t3 flange for 70$ and theres a t3 turbo on the org for 100$. Or i can get a srt setup for 350, but i need to find a adapter for it.

Looking for opinions as to what would b a better setup. I dont kno much about the turbo world yet. Looking to run around 8 lbs, stock computer stock bottom end mag head 93 octane

I would go T3 much more options should you decide to expand down the road. With the srt mani theres only certain options and none really worth the money.

Looks like this made your decision :p

Look at mine and NGCnoproblem's progress logs. My build is almost complete and his is in and running. There's A LOT involved, and it can get very expensive very quick.

What are your plans for IC piping? Will you be running MS or go with an rrfpr/fic? Don't forget your fuel mods to support it all.

By the looks of that manifold it might not fit your car. Also you don't want that type of manifold cause that sets the turbo mounted to the back of the manifold. You want it to sit on top of the manifold. Also how much do you plan on spending for this setup cause I'll tell you right now it's going to cost you anywhere from $1100 to $2500 depending on how much stuff you buy used vs new and who tunes it also how much of the work you do yourself etc. Also I wouldn't buy that turbo you show pictured there.

Also have you talked to Eric yet.. He is the goto guy when it comes to questions about turboes and what's all needed to get it up and running. also he can tune it for you. His name on here is esteinmajer

You have only scratched the surface of what you need...there is another $1500 worth of parts still needed. Start doing your research and collecting the little stuff.

I kno its a process.. well prepared for it. Little by little.

I plan on using stock srt intercooler and piping. Stage 0 or 1 injectors i think should b fine? Not sure. Would LOVE to go ms..will happen eventually

I get what u mean with the manifold, hopefully it'll work. If not, atleast it was only 65$.

Was thinking about something along the lines of this,
Want it to spool quick, not looking for crazy hp numbers

You've got a lot of research to do on turboes if you think that ebay turbo is good. Those ebay brand turboes are crap and won't last but maybe 500miles or so before they break. Search and read up. A good turbo is going to run you anywhere from $500 to $1000, could be more but I doubt you need a more expensive turbo than that.

I've heard decent things about the ebay godspeed turbos. I know a lot of LS V8 guys run them and so do Mustang guys. That turbo doesn't have a wastegate though and would require and externale gate. I know a Holset turbo from a diesel dodge will work. I can't remember which one is the small one though and they are internally gated. One is a HX35 and one is a HY35.

If that Turbo has the five bolt garret exhaust flange eBay sells internal gate kits for 50 shipped. Comes with everything.... I've also heard decent things about Godspeed. A friend of mine has been running a "50-trim" for two years..... zero problems. So I don't know where you guys think there only gonna last 500 miles lol... maybe without a Turbo timer because there oil cooled only. Let me add some fuel.... precision, agp,Turbonetics, garret they have all Had failures. Plus a lot of the gt garrets are still journal bearing turbos. Which is what god speed sells. Take your pick on any turbo... treat it like a whore and you'll have problems.

thats kinda what i meant to say when i said it will only last a few hundred miles, treat turbo good and itll last a while but beat on it and itll break just like everything else does. if u choose an ebay turbo then try not to beat on it till youve drove it for a few good miles.

Godspeed is supposed to carry a warranty with there turbos... at least a year or two... so it should have been covered under a warranty...not sure why they laughed at you.

from the looks of that manifold it kind of resembles the one you would get for a reversed head eclipse motor.

this is why i decided to do a dohc head swap and then turbo that down the road. much easier to get turbo manifolds for a dohc head than an sohc head or you can use the srt turbofold on the dohc head..

That's one of the things ii thought about before doing my mag head swap.. But decided against it for some reason. so mag turbo it is. Would've been way better off with dohc though to ease the pain

i've been debating this for months but the dohc just makes more sense in my opinion based on available parts. plus in my case when i'm ready to i'm gonna swap the head and put on the .027" cometic headgasket to stay na till i've aquired all the parts i need to actually go turbo. that gives me time to see if i want to stick with the 2.0 bottom end or go 2.4. whats nice about the dohc is theres no hunting down of adapter plates or one off sohc turbo manifolds. just get a dohc head that can bolt up an srt turbo manifold and your good to go.

in my opinion its easier and the parts are more readily available to do it. but in the end its the op's car and he is free to do what he wants. i prefer the dohc. i had one in my first gen after my sohc blew a hole in a piston.

Something I noticed about the turbo you linked to, it looks to be an external wastegate turbo and your manifold does not have a wastegate flange on it. Just something to look at.

^^Very true!
can have the Guys at my job weld a flange on though!

So finally got it in my possession, and it seems TINY! The primaries look small, the whole piece does... But I've never seen one in person so it's hard to tell actual size from pics

Image

What do u Guys think.. And no waste gate flange.. Could easily have one put on though. wheres the best spot to put it?
