i did this thing...

Post by jacob711 » Wed Jul 20, 2011 4:13 pm

hey guys, havin my first topic right here. Alright so i got my new sxt just the other day and i got to lookin in the engine comp. And i started un-screwing and un- bolting some air intake parts. I got the stock airbox out real quick and just noticed a crazy idea, what if i used the drill and skill-saw to do a little "opening-up" So i got a sharpie and made a real good sized hole on the grill side of the box and started cuttin. I got all the shavings out and re-assembled it, IT ROARS NOW! i was excited for the small growl my intake made, i also noticed if you give a small rev it sounds like a supercharger, i dunno. But my real question is was that a good idea or what, and how many people do these type DIY mods? And if there are anymore real easy upgrades i can do throw them at me. OH and before i forget, i "stole" my brother k&n filter off his 01 r/t :)

Well, you put a bit more effort into your stock airbox than most people do. To get even more air into the engine, you can simply remove the airbox lid.

You might as well go the rest of the way and remove the resonator chamber from behind the bumper too. It just makes the intake quieter and weighs quite a bit.

so you basically made a hole in the intake box? when you expose the filter you can hear the intake clearly sucking air in, that is the "supercharger" noise. Although I don't see the point in making a hole in it. Should have just removed the box instead of that. However if it were down to me I wouldn't mess with the box unless I was going for a cold air intake, because if you haven't noticed there is a tube on the other side of the box which has the Air Temp Sensor attached which feeds down to the fender, in essence sucking in slightly colder air than that within the engine bay.

Oh forgot to say WELCOME

hey, thanks for the welcome! And those "resonators" you speak of, are they they foam looking inserts behind the grill and infront of the radiator, and how easy are they to take out, and what about the fender well tubing, whats the difficulty level to remove that, and the reason i left the lid on at first was to keep my filter in place since it wasnt clamped to the TB, but know i guess i could take it off now after i installed a k&n. Well if you think about it a giant hole in the intake isnt all to bad since air slips through the grill and gets "intaked".

The resonator is the plastic box in front of the drivers side wheel.

well what about the foam inserts behind the grill, they look like the block a lot of air from reaching the engine bay.

UPDATE* yea i know its a double post "honestly i dont care" but where i live.. in north Alabama, if i take the lid off the wouldnt that defeat the purpose of the lid? I already have outside air flowing right into the filter, and with the lid off then ill just suck in the engine's mean heat. i think of it right now as if i have a mini CAI on and the lid is a shield. Maybe some heat tape on the tranny and engine side would help more? and im lookin at the resonator...very interesting. My sister drove it around walmart today and asked me why does it make that roaring sound lol.

save all this hassle with the box, resonator etc. And buy an ebay cold air intake.

Oh, well fuck NGC. And he doesn't sound like he's at the engine internals point yet, so cam and head are a bit much.

But do it up man, focus on power and stability over looks and stereo.
