Air box mod/cold air/ram air ghetto *now with pics*

Post by Yellow04r/t » Sat May 05, 2012 7:46 pm

Okay guys not sure how much horsepower I gained here but for 15 bucks I ain't complaining :D I made myself a cold air / ram air for my 04 neon r/t I cut a big hole in the bottom of my air box and ran a price of flexible 4" alluminum piping to it from my bottom drivers side body kit vent. Behinds the vent I used a furnace duct that fits in your floor. So in theory it's getting cold air and the faster I drive the more positive pressure the air box is getting. I built a plug for the factory hole in the air box and made it easily removable so if it's raining real hard I can let it suck air from there. I also relocated the sensor to inside the air box. Results~~~ throaghty sound, louder at the exhaust end and better throttle response. I'm pretty impressed for a 15$ ghetto mod. Next up k&n air filter....
Image top looking down you can kinda see the piping
Image if you look far enough back you can see where it sneeks past the wheel well

heres the intake end of it just inside the front bumper beside the rad on the drivers side

I've seen a similar setup using a ractive heat shield filter, seems to work well for what it is.

I did this, little different method, in a track only setup. Didn't really produce any real gains though. The differences in ET could have easily fallen into margin of error.

Thank you! Lol yeah it's not nothing spectacular but for 15 bucks it did its job we'll I'd say. Any suggestions on filter brands?

K&N is usually the favorite, not sure about other brands.

I'm considering making something similar, just too lazy to do it. I'd like to run the piping through the oem fender hole and somehow attach it to the end of this filter shield:

You guys are all morons.

OP - I'm glad to see someone trying to mod correctly on a budget. For $15 and some piping that can hold up to certain elements, this isn't a terrible idea by any means. There are several "l337" cold air installations that utilize the stock box, and this one is no different. It's somewhat innovative, somewhat reversible, cheap, and still safe. It may not be the prettiest, but I'll be damned if it isn't getting the job done. PLUS you've utilized your PAINT MATCHED body kit to an extent and it appears as though you're into building the car yourself and getting out of it everything that you can.

I've personally cut off the bottom half of my airbox, but I didn't put any piping. In theory, I suppose I'm still pulling 1/2 air from the fender well and 1/2 straight on the bottom of the engine bay.

If it seems stupid but works, it isn't stupid is it? I did basically the same thing on mine but I demolished the dryer vent taking it off to make some changes. Props to the OP for a DIY job that's functional and cheap.

It's called working with wat you got. You don't know what rice is. I giant aluminum wing and a fart cannon exhaust is rice. A form of are intake that actually improves performance (even if its hardly any) that fits in the budget of someone isn't rice. Go talk Shit on a different forum cus that's not what this place is for.

No it's just we can't stand closed minded people.

Open your mind a little. At least he didn't say he gained 20hp from it.

Wow. smh

Personally,
I think it was a good idea. Modding on a budget

Shit, if I didn't work @ Autozone, I'd probably have the same/similar setup lol.

But instead, I just got all the aluminum pieces and made it look good I guess.

Good job man. Keep it up

Making fun of him for using Duct tape? from what I see he is using Ducting, so why not the tape.

On another note Im sure with the length of the ducting and gravity if you were to cut a hole in the bottom of your airbox and put some sort of small filter into it, that even if it was raining hard the water would drop out the bottom.

on another nother note, this is my first post, great to see what everyone is doing to their cars, from 15 dollar mods all the way up to being able to buy a brand new Challenger in mods, but wheres the fun in letting someone else build your car right? :D

Next few weeks are looking busy for me I got 3 finals to write, gotta work, straighten the axle on my race quad and swap trannies and do some other minor work to the neon and a fresh oil change for the work truck too lol
