60mm Throttle Body - Diameter envy? Useful? Where?

Have a question about how to make horsepower going the all motor route, here's where to ask it.

60mm Throttle Body - Diameter envy? Useful? Where?

Post by MoparOso » Wed May 08, 2013 6:57 pm

Okay,

So I've got this engine project going on that some folks here and on neons.org have been really stand up about putting up with some of my less informed questions. I've learned quite a bit, and I like it that way, because I have never had a marque I've owned vehicles from that I did not work hard to learn the specifics of my vehicle in detail.

I've poked around on modern's website, okay, I blew a few months worth of mortgage payments there, but hey.... A guy's gotta have a hobby. Anyway, I saw the now discontinued 60mm throttle body, and with what I'm doing to the engine between head and cam work as well as all nice internals, I was wondering if the 60mm TB should command any respect.

I did find it odd that since Modern stopped selling the piece no one is making something, not that I can find anyway. This is what leads me to question whether trying to track one of these down is worthwhile or a waste of time and money that could be spent elsewhere.

Feedback?

i kno quite a few people have them. i have one myself. it's supposed to give a better throttle response.

if ur building the whole engine i don't see how it wouldn't help u out.. id say go for it!

i've had one for the last 7-8 years. definitely worth tracking down if your going to build up the motor

Your main risk with it is the '03 to '04 may get a CEL.

"TPS/MAP correlation".

It is more common on '05, but hit and miss on the earlier NGC's.

That is why some have leaned towards something in the 55 to 56mm size.

I have no issue using a 55mm - 56mm unit. The difference in performance is likely to be nominal compared to the 60mm piece. If it's going to avoid throwing MIL's I'll deal with it, and after all, can the difference in performance between the smaller two be greater than the hampered performance and restriction of the stock device?

Now my only problem is tracking one down. I'm too new here to post in the classified section. This is still after kicking the joint 100 bones to help support it. Ha ha... lucky me. It's all good, sooner or later one will find me.

If you get a TPS voltage code, then the throttle shaft needs filed like shown in the second link, to use the neon's TPS. Otherwise the TPS to V6 TB is a direct bolt on, like mentioned in the above link.

An adapter made to attach the bellows to the TB. You could also make another adapter to attach it to the stock air box if you wanted.

I guess I'm getting old and need to turn my modder's card in, because I just read all of that and thought to myself "Uh... where can I buy this prefabricated?"

Yeah, getting a flange made, is the toughest part about this mod, and probably why not many have embraced it. You can get a used 60mm Ford TB for a fraction of what the MPX unit costs, but making it plug and play is a bit more work.

Seaching ebay sometimes turns up a decent mass airflow adapter that isn't 90mm and paper thin.

Why doesn't someone here who has one for a late MTX vehicle just say "Hey man.... I'll sell you this one?" This way life would be easy for me and the dude who sells me one has one less thing he doesn't need and extra cash in his pocket.

Not many have a ~55mm TB. A modded SRT tb is about the only ones I have read about, and they are as much work as adapting the Ford TB. Plus I believe they have to be bored to be a true 55mm?

As far as 60mm MPX units, you can find them for sale here and there.

If the 55mm is such a red headed stepchild then why is it even mentioned as a viable alternative? Sound like either the Ford TB or the Mpx unit are really the two choices.

Btw... why did Mpx stop selling their TB?

mpx stopped production of them a while ago, then a short while ago they brought them back and sold out.. not sure why they stopped.

Lorenzo also made throttle bodies a long time ago, which is what i have. and if it won't work with my swap coming up shortly, it'll b for sale!

I really loved my 60mm TB on my 04, but it would throw a code if I were cruising at a high speed for a while. Although, it did improve throttle response for sure. You can find one appearing here and there, but you're gonna have to wait. I think I paid $150 for mine?

Some dude on FB now does ECU tuning for the N/A cars, and he said he can fix the code thrown by the 60mm.

modern stopped selling them because of the lack of sales. many of their parts that they stock have quick turn around rates. however, they had to pay for those throttle bodies from tooling to shipping and that's a lot of over head to just have sitting on a shelf

It doesn't help that 80% of the folks here tell you it doesn't really give you a power increase.

Yeah, it takes some adapting to get your brain to control your foot to keep from giving too much throttle, creating a bog situation, but once you get the hang of it, you will absolutely hate having the stock TB on there if you swap back.

Like most N/A mods, it isn't going to be an earth shattering gain, but it is very noticeable when you take it away.
