Real experience needed; Muffler Stock vs RT vs 1st Gen dohc

Post by SPL Neon » Fri Nov 22, 2013 8:36 pm

Anyone have dyno results from trying each of these mufflers on the stock mid pipe and cat, and exhaust mani? Also, I have a complete 1st gen exhaust, (pacesetter header, hi-flow cat, 2.25"mid pipe and DOHC Muffler. Would it be worth swapping it over into my 2000? The R/T muffler would be the easiest route for me and I would use that if it is worth it with the small factory piping?!

A 2001 - 2004 R/T muffler?

The 1gn exhaust is different where it goes past the rear suspension. It probably wont clear properly. The hangers on the DOHC muffler are different than the 2gn hangers. You will need to do some fabbing to get it to work. If the R/T is a 2gn muffler, you will need an adapter to work with the 2000 midpipe. Or have the end expanded to fit the R/T 's inlet.

2.25" is plenty for a near stock or mild bolt ons. The 2000, more than likely is a 2.00" mid pipe. The late 2001 to 2005's have a 2.25 mid pipe, but it necks down to 2.00" at the end. Only the R/T's have a true full 2.25" exhaust.

Cool, so Ideally, it would be benificial to swap on the complete 2gn R/T exhaust, and Just plug the upstream o2 bung befor the cat on the R/T piping or grab a magnum header at the same time?

I've been around both 1st gen R/T's and 2nd gen R/T's with the factory exhaust.

I will say that the 1st gen DOHC muffler, is quieter than the 2nd gen R/T muffler.

If you want quiet, go with the 1st gen DOHC muffler.
Not only that, it is an excellent design - It flows very decent, despite being quiet.

As Bill said, the hangers on the 1st gen DOHC muffler, are different than the 2nd gen hangers.
From what I remember, the hangers are in a *similar* location, but not exactly the same.
It would not be overly difficult, to adapt a 1st gen muffler, to a 2nd gen - but then, it's not exactly bolt-on, either.

Yeah, I was thinking the 1st Gen DOHC muffler would be lighter too.

The *[factory] DOHC muffler is actually pretty hefty.
Weight-wise, it is probably still lighter than the factory R/T muffler, however.

*This being said - I have an aftermarket DOHC muffler in storage, that weighs about half as much as the factory DOHC muffler. :!:

The problem with that ^ aftermarket muffler, is that it has the 'cheezy' and stoopid, cheap, 'NON-mandrel' tailpipes.... You know, with the 'ribbed' bends, that impede flow. :x
If you are like me, you'd want to avoid ^ those.... Why 'downgrade', when you can be doing an 'upgrade', instead ??
Hell, *if* I use it, I am going to cut off the stooopid cheezy ribbed tailpipes, and weld on a pair of the factory DOHC tailpipes. :) (Yes I am being serious)

I don't know the brand name of this aftermarket DOHC muffler - I picked it up at a junkyard - If anyone wants, I can go and have a look at it, to see if I can find any markings, 'for future reference'.

Searching for mufflers, I came across a Mopar on line dealer that had the oem performance Mopar numbers listed for the mufflers for the neon through the current model line up. In all the decriptions was the Walker Queitflow and Walker PN.

Now whether this was that dealer substituting the Mopar part for those, and selling them at Mopar pricing, or if Mopar is using Walker as the vendor for oem replacements, I can't say. BUT, if ordering a new DOHC muffler, I would specifically ask if it is just a Walker unit.

The Quiet Flow DOHC muffler is not quiet. It also has a very restrictive inlet inside the 2.25 connector pipe. Maybe 1.50" Perforated tube. While the perforations may allow more flow, it still necks down before being perforated.
If they are using Walker, you may as well get one for under $70 at Summit Racing. Or better, get a Magnaflow, and a Vibrant Ultra quiet resonator for the price Mopar wants.

I should have bookmarked that site...

The Walker Quietflow V6 Camaro muffler I have on my '01 is a much nicer sound than the Walker QF DOHC I bought for the 1gn. It probably doesn't flow any better, but it does sound a lot better. The Camaro muffler has a quality rumble, as where the DOHC sounds cheap and a bit ricey.

Based up this review - AND others that I have read...... The Walker 'QUIET-flow', isn't really all that quiet... And probably doesn't flow as good as the original factory DOHC muffler, either. :(

I've been searching for a dohc muffler for my coupe that doesn't have the god awful crinkle bend piping. Through my searching I cannot find a unit that has a smooth bend even through the dealer. By the looks of it I'll be using a universal unit or a crap for crap fart cannon

I never thought the dohc muffler was that loud, Compared to some mufflers I used. Although I had a Cat on the car which problly quieted it some.
