ive read a lot of netgear reviews and most of them are bad....... if you notice the good rated ones on tom's networking the routers are > $150... so my unprofessional opinion would be to stay away from netgear unless you get a really good deal and can return it if it sucks
ive got a linksys wrt54g v5 with ddwrt firmware.. everyone says this router blows and even has a bad review on toms site, BUT it does the job and i havent had any problems with it -- at least that i know of, i suppose if i put it side to side with another router and compared maybe there'd be a difference.. who knows
but if you just need something to get online with wifi, a wrt54g/gs/gl is fine. there are enough security options and modded firmware if wanted

I've had my Linksys 802.11b (yes it's old
) and have had no problems other than it'll need to be reset every now and then if isn't used for awhile. I've had a netgear wired routers and it worked great for the week that I had it before I took it off b/c I didn't need it anymore. I love netgear switches though, hate the linksys ones but it's mainly bc of the form factor that the old netgear boxes were easily stack or hangable.

I have Netgear. At the time I purchased it, I received nothing but good reviews from people. Regardless, it has held up just fine. The router is in the basement of the house and even 2 floors up (where my room is), my desktop and laptop never have any issues. Obviously, from time to time you have to reset the router but that's normal.
