Dangerdave is losing the Neon

Well, 122000 miles, aninsurance deductable, and college staring me down the face, its time to move on. I need a almost new car that is going to get me back and forth to Philly, and the Neon is going to cost more money than its worth to make road-worthy. Its only worth $4000  . I am now in the decision making process, my options right now are either a 2.3 Mazda3, or a 1.8T Jetta, but Im looking at anything in that 10-15,000 dollar range. I wanted an SRT4 so bad, but I just cant get my Mom to budge on it, she thinks the Neons are not structurally sound and unsafe  but I really cant argue with the other options.
Let me know what you guys think, especially with the Jetta's. Ive heard speculation and rumors, but its hard to tell if they are that unreliable.

The Jetta is a comfortable car to be driving but the stock parts will cost you alot.I would go with a jetta.

You can have the SRT midpipe, but the rear section has burned into the back bumper and I dont want to have that empty hole on that bumper.

Have you driven either?

And your mom isn't being parinoid when she says the Neon is thinner that a soda can.

Jetta = expensive to fix if something breaks.

10-15k range? I'd go miata.

You wouldn't want to trade rims, would you?

if it's for college, and you need a daily driver... screw going performance or looks of any of that hoo-ha!

get something that's GREAT on gas! You can buy a fast car when you're out and actually have a good job!

Domestic > Import 8)

if not a neon (or a caliber), how about a cobalt? You all serously like import cars way to much for domestic owners :P

Dude, for 10-15k you can get some hella better more reliable cars that also hve an aftermarket... ie: CIVIC. Sorry, but as many ricers are out there and me-too cars, the CIVIC takes the cake on both - but damn they are great cars! Especially for a college dude driving back and forth.

Think of it this way - all those ricer tendancies you have can be fullfilled through Autozone for 1/4 of the price we Neon guys have to spend! :D

Seriously though, Civic is my personal choice. Mucho better than Jetta, but not quite a Mazda tres.
