So... Bought a house today!

Post by 03sxt » Sat Dec 16, 2006 4:51 am

That's right! The wife and I met with a mortgage consultant this morning at our bank and we were approved to move into a 3,200 sq. ft. home across town!

As some of you may remember, my grandfather passed away earlier this year and my dad's been in charge of the estate to sell his house. After being on the market for 6 months, my dad got sick of dealing with all of it and finally decided to go rock bottom and offer me the house for $31,000. It was appraised about 5 years ago for $53,000, so I'm getting a damn good deal. A lot of you HAVE to be wondering about how big of a dump it is since a lot of you have houses valued at around $90,000+... Well, housing around here is real cheap because the area is quite quiet and not a booming place like larger cities. The house needs a bit of minor work, like general updating, but for the more part, it will be a fun (and costly) project to make the house whatever we want. I'm excited and I can't wait to get the ball rolling! I'll probably be moved in there sometime after the new year... I'm so excited that I finally get to get out of this trailer I've been living in for 4 years. It's helped me catch up on a lot of bills and get a weeee bit of money saved, but I hate it here. Trailer parks are definitely for the lose.

Alright, I'm done rambling... I'm just excited. Things will be a little tighter now, but at least I'll have something to be proud of!

Hahaha! I'm not. That's why I can't wait to get out of here. I was royally screwed financially about 4 years ago and a friend of mine lived here before me. He wanted to buy a house and needed a down payment of $3000... So I bought the trailer off of him and settled in here to get my feet back down on the ground. I hate my neighbors and I hate the park managers... The only thing that's nice about being here is that it's extremely affordable and I have a large deck (valued more than the trailer itself, practically ).

What the hell do you mean, "That kind of guy?"
I grew up in a trailer! My parents got one moved out onto private land into the country, and that's where I've lived for 15 years. In the past year, they've bought the land, added an addition, planted it to the ground, and have turned it into an actual house.

This year I've been trying to buy a trailer, but turns out I can't afford it for the time being.

So seriously, what do you mean by "That kind of guy?"

[/offended]

Oh, and congrats Mike!
I personally can't wait for the day I'm a home owner! It's strangly something I dream about. :D

Trailers are nice if they're done right man... I was down in Arkansas a few years ago, and stayed with a friends brother and sister in law... and DAMN! It was a double wide, and you could hardly tell it was a trailer from the outside, and had NO CLUE at all from the inside.

But I'd agree that the stereotype is that they're for poor peeps... it's a bad stereotype, but that's it...

Congrats! Now you can throw some mad crazy parties since it's your house. That's a pretty sweet deal especially when the property increases more in value in a couple of years (Example: wait til ::insert some big name company:: rolls into town). :D

You guys are funny with the trailer thing. Yeah, it's a bad stereotype, but where my trailer is - All of those stereotypes are here and it sucks. For the last 4 years, I've kept to myself. We thought we had a good neighbor for a while until the day she forgot to take her meds. She wigged out on her boyfriend and bashed all of the windows in on his car one day. It was crazy. Of course, not all people that live in trailers fit the stereotype... Like me. I like to think I'm 'normal'.

And thanks everyone for the congratulations. :) I'm stoked and I'll be taking lots of pictures as soon as we finalize the deal and start the move. I'll probably sign the papers and everything shortly after Christmas and start the move in early January. I'm going to be doing a lot of work to the outside of the house because it's quite boring... White house with black shutters & trim. It needs painted, but that's nothing. I'm going to keep it white, I think and do a maroon or navy trim... Not sure, yet. I'll have some nice before, during, and after pictures coming soon, though. :-D

Congrats on the house! 31,000 for a 3,200 sq ft home...Jezus...we paid $163,000 for a 2,300 sq ft home w/ 1 acre of land.

Might be time to move to Ohio......NOT!

Once again, congrats and good luck. Just remember when it's the dead of winter and you wake up without any heat...you have to either fix it yourself or call someone to fix it....no landlord to depend on.

Yeah, well... I've never really had a landlord... Because here it's my trailer, I just rent the lot - Own the trailer. So I've been repairing my own stuff when it breaks... And before this, I was renting the mother-in-law's house so I pretty much did all of the work there, too.

I lived in a double wide from when i was born up until about 7 or 8 years ago...but my mom took very good care of it, the only thing w/ it is that i never felt safe. not sure why though...it wasnt because it was a crappy house or anything :?

Oh I agree about the comment saying some trailers don't even look like trailer but typically when you see trailer parks they look like semi-truck trailers with windows in them. When I visited some friends up in Wisconsin a few years ago they lived in a double wide and you couldn't even tell it was a trailer. Size wasn't too bad either, hell it probably have more square footage then our old house in Cincinnati. Down here though, the land is super expensive since the area is growing so fast or you hardly get any land at all. The houses are fairly cheap but there's no way in hell you'll find something at that sq footage at that price down here.

Congrats though dude, hopefully in 4-6 years I'll be able to by a house of my own as well, even if it is a tiny one, at least it's a true investment and I'm not tossing the cash down the drain.
