the curse has struck (another update, 2/20/07)

Well, my good luck streak of no accidents has ended. I felt pretty good about it too, thinking back. I have >100,000 miles of driving experience among three cars with no major accidents, there was a little scuff from an old man in a parking lot. I consider that pretty good for my age.

It was a rather rude awakening to hear a police officer knocking on the door at 1:30a. Apparantly someone came hauling ass into our apartment parking lot. The suspect bounced off an S-10, drilled my fiances beetle, which pushed her beetle into an old sentra and then the sentra into my car. The police estimate the driver was going about 35 - 40mph when the entered the parking lot.

The only thing that sent the sentra into my car was the impact from the beetle, so I'm pretty worried about the beetle being totaled. The beetle was not touching the sentra when it was all said and done. That is why I'm suspecting that the beetle took a pretty good hit. Hopefully the frame isn't bent and its mainly body damage because it would really blow to have to get another car right now. I'm sure her parents would get her set up but it's not the best time to be spending money on a car. She's graduating in May and her sister is getting married in June.

From a first glance the beetle only looked like it had surface damage (scuffs and such) but after moving the car I noticed that it took a lot of effort to move the car, and on further investigation the wheel well was pushed into the tire. My car isn't too bad. I think it looks a lot worse than it actually is. My car is gonna need a quarter panel and the stuff associated with the fuel door. It looked like the wheel well in the truck got pushed in a little, but I may just be remembering how it used to be wrong. I guess I got pretty lucky, the wheel is fine and the car is still drivable with no apparent mechanical problems. We had to drive an hour to my parents house last nite to get their spare car for her to drive. And all was normal feeling the entire trip, but this morning I thought I was feeling some low speed wobble, but it could have been something else.

I'll post pictures later. If they don't come out good tonite, then I'll try to get some in the morning. I think the worst part of it all was we slept for 3 hours, and then was up for 3.5 hours dealing with crap and then slept for another hour. So both of us are dragging pretty bad today.

I've been waiting for a call from the insurance adjuster, I'm probably going to give them a call very soon. We are also waiting for her adjuster to get in contact with us.

They left a trail of coolant which the cops traced as long as the could. The only person that knew anything was a foreign exchange student across the street. But he only heard the noise and then called the cops. The cops suspect its a grey 4- door. I have my suspision that it is a smaller car because the skid marks aren't that wide. I'm guessing 01 - 05 civic size car.

My fiance and I must have been gone because we didn't even flinch when it happened, but the guy across the street, a few hundred feet away heard it.

Well I would be on the lookout for a car with no front end....that would be a start.

Good luck with the insurance and all that...

So far our insurances have been pretty cool about the whole thing.

They are classifying this as an uninsured motorist accident. Her car is getting towed to the shop tomorrow and she should be getting a rental tomorrow, paid by insurance. I have to take my car to a shop and if the rental company lets me have a car then my insurance will pay for that too.

Its a pain in the ass, but the insurance companies aren't being difficult about it.

update...

I'm all set up to get the car fixed on tuesday. I accidentally found out that they estimated $1400 for the neon.

We are still waiting on the beetle. She got her rental car, a 2007 PT Cruiser. Might have to steal the engine out of it before it goes back

I forgot to add this...

The spare car that my fiance was driving was my dads car. So she was not listed on our insurance. Anyways... she was driving home on Monday and a guy in a miata ran a redlight. She got on her brakes good and avoided major damage. The stratus (our spare car) has come scuffing and such on the front bumper and the miata has scuffing and a crack in the rear bumper. The other guy is claiming he had green. But I don't believe him based on what I know about that intersection.

Maybe your fiance shouldn't drive for awhile it seems the road and driving Gods have it out for her for some reason.

Glad that everything is getting fixed. And yeah, damage to your own vehicle ALWAYS looks worse then it actually is.

Yeah, its been one hell of a week. She also left the lights on Tuesday. So she's pretty pissed off at the world, but shes getting over it. She was pretty worked up until yesterday.

We all have those weeks. Where you start feeling like, "What's next?" And that nothing can surprise you anymore. I hate those weeks/months. But the good thing is...it won't last forever.

atleast you all weren't in the car when it happened.

Yeah, that would have been one hell of a jolt if we were in the beetle. The neon probably not so much, but it would have hurt if we were in the beetle.

the beetle is fixable. they estimate $3000. she is supposed to have it back friday but we shall see since last time this place took a month to fix her car.

i took my car in today. im supposed to have it back friday. i got my rental, ford taurus yuk. i hate this car. im also hating on enterprise right now. all the tires were low and only half of the driver side wiper worked. so i put a spare from my neon on it, its a couple inches shorter but it wipes better, for the time being. hopefully i will get my car back soon.

i dont understand why people spend the money on a taurus. the ride sucks, fuel economy sucks. so far i have only peaked at 26mpg on the display and that was only during a 20 mile highway trip. now that i drove around town for a little, i fell to 23mpg. i feel my neon has more power than this thing. i punched it from a stop, and it didnt spin and it felt like my neon would have raped it.

well bad update.

i taked to the body shop and it turns out the unibody got hosed up a bit so they had to put it on the frame machine. i asked if there wass any way it was totaled and he said no. so thats a good thing. but i wont get my car back for another week.

we should be getting the beetle back today though.

another update.

we got the beetle back last week but something was causing it to pull to the left. so its back in the shop. that is supposed to be done tomorrow.

my car still isnt done. its really starting to piss me off. it was supposed to be done last fri (2/16) but it was just getting to paint on that day. ok, thats fine. i understand that. we had some wicked weather last week and the probably lost a day or more from that. we were all setup for me to pickup the car today between 8a & 9a. i had meant to call them yesterday and double check, but i ran out of time. so i called them at 8a today and they said its still in paint and it wouldnt be done until tomorrow. :cussing: well tomorrow is no good for me, i have classes from 8:45a to 5:15p. they said they can extend the rental car til thursday. so i call the insurance co and the person there didnt have a problem with extending the car to thursday.

i just want my damn car back. i miss the gas mileage, the xm, and i found out last nite i miss the turning radius. and most of all its my car.

exactly. i think what pisses me off the most about it is their lack of communication. the only time they called me to tell me about anything (without me calling first) was this past friday when they said it wouldnt be ready until today.

what if i didnt call and i got up and ready and such, then drove to their place and its not done. i would have been :cussing: pretty good.

warning for anyone in the baltimore area. DO NOT take you car to shaeffer and strhominger (i think thats how you spell it) their communication skills suck big balls.
