HASTINGS -- At 23, Brian Lancaster had a house and a good job. He talked about marrying his girlfriend.
Those dreams were shattered Saturday when Lancaster died in a car crash near Hastings that police say was alcohol-related.
"He was a good boy," his father, Dean Lancaster said.
Brian Lancaster, of Hastings, was a passenger in a 1973 Chevy Nova driven by a 35-year-old Hastings man when it hit a tree at Whitmore and Upton roads in Rutland Township about 10 p.m.
The car was westbound on Upton when it went though the T-intersection at Whitmore, state police said. The driver and another passenger, a 13-year-old boy, were taken to Pennock Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
Their names were not released Sunday. Police said the driver is expected to face charges.
Dean Lancaster said he cannot imagine why his son would ride with a drunken driver.
"I don't understand why he would get in the car," he said.
Brian Lancaster was a Hastings High School graduate and worked at Viking Corp., a maker of sprinkler heads, through a temporary agency.
His father said he liked fast cars, particularly Honda vehicles, and had many friends. He described his son as "extremely outgoing" and said he enjoyed going to car shows with his friends.
Lancaster said his son was living in a house he inherited and had a girlfriend he hoped to marry.
The driver in the fatal crash was the cousin of Brian Lancaster's girlfriend, Dean Lancaster said.
Police said excessive speed and seat-belt use were factors in the crash. Troopers did not say whether any of the occupants wore seat belts.
