Car Detailing - Wet Sand, Buffing, Etc.

Post by 01WhiteNe0n » Sun Jul 01, 2007 11:53 pm

Well yesterday I was talking to my neighbor and I always knew he painted cars and stuff but never knew he was a professional. Turns out he has his own shop and everything.
I asked him if he would wet sand my car for me and he asked if it was factory paint And I said yeah and he said no :( He said they put so little paint that you could burn though it.

My front and back bumper have some runs in from the clear, they were painted in a garage on a horse by me and my brother so thats reasonable. He also told me that once it runs like the way it is that it just has to be repainted as wetsanding will sand the low spot while sanding the high spot so it won't work out verywell.
Well he told me that he could also paint my car if I bought the stuff so that is the route i'm going to go.

Untill I repaint the car It needs to be a little bit more presentable for carlisle so I want to attempt to detail the car myself. I want to take my time and wet sand down the runs.. (They are only in the clear) and then wet sand the rest of the bumpers. What should I do to Blend in the paint and make the paint of the body revived.
Should I attempt to wet sand the Whole car just taking my time and then buffing it out with a good rubbing compund ?
What grit sandpaper should I use and what kind of a rubbing compound should I use ?

After I accomplish this I will wash and then wax the car and it hopefully w/o getting messed up look pretty nice :)

Then tuesday I will paint the Exhaust area Black and then My windows will be tinted finally

All help and tips appreciated

too thin to wetsand? what the hell is he planning to sand it with???

when i sand a trunk or a wing, i use an orbital and 60grit, and it still takes a while to take all the paint up.. he's right, the paint is super thin, but there is room to sand...

if you just have runs in the clearcoat, you DONT need to repaint or redo your job... what kind of pro is this that doesnt even know that much?????

what i do if any of my cf stuff comes back from clear coating with small runs or whatever, is i wetsand and repolish...

what you do is you go buy 1500grit water resistant sandpaper, and sand the areas that aren't perfect... obviously being 1500, it's not gonna eat up a lot of material at all, so hopefully your runs arent huge... so, you wet sand the areas you want until you're happy. Your clear will look all scruffy and fucked up when the water dries... wash away all of the sanding crap...

then, go out and purchase a bottle of 3M Perfect-IT 06060 (napa has it, but check the 3M distributor list off of their website to see who has it in your area). Make sure you get the 06060, as there are different versions... the 06060 has a more aggressive rubbing compound, and will take out any scratches made by 1500grit sandpaper

then you get a cheap buffer, put a little bit of the 3M stuff on it, and just buff it in and polish it until the shine comes back. you're done :)

this is how i do it, and its very easy and very quick to do....

if your runs are that big, sand with 220-320 grit wet sand paper, even it out, then just spray another coat of clear... that's what regular body shops do all the time... no sense taking it all off and restarting
