do i need a special drill bit to drill through metal? i'm trying to drill a hole in my oil drain plug so i can use a bolt extractor, but it seems like the bits i have are doing nothing...

Yup you need a special one alright, for a special person you are.

Check out any tool place and you should find some.

im sure he was jokin....and yes craftsman if u want a quality bit but be prepared to spend more or ur local lowes or what ever u guys got over there

just drilled through stainless steal with those bits and they worked very very well

are stripped drain plug bolts a common problem with neons? Bc on my old 1gn and on my 2gn its on so tight that I cant get it, or the bolt is stripped.

If your typical "metal" drill bit can't get through a bolt(like a hardened grade 8 bolt) you can actually use a carbide masonry bit. Just buy one of the cheap vermont american bits at home depot and itll go through the steel like butta

Mine was nasty as hell from the previous owner. Made a thread about it... I ended up getting a brand new ona and torqued it to spec which is like 17-20 foot pounds I believe.

Oh by the way I wasn't joking....

i can't even describe what shape my drain plug is... kind of round, square, and triangle? and rusted bad so hopefully i get it out tomorrow...

I don't know what kind of gorilla put on my drain plug last, but, I had to torch it, and take a hammer and chisel to it to pound it. I took my dremel and madre little notches aroune the edge of the bolt shoulder, and put the chisel in the notches, hammered it around, no problem.

how hot did you have to get it? i'm afraid the drill i have isn't going to be strong enough to extract it...

Actually, thats not what did it, I think it was the notches and the pounding that did it.

Go buy a "bolt out" kit from Craftsman. They really do work. So does the "screw out" kit.

If your using a "normal" B&D 3/8th hand man helper drill that may add to the reason why your not having much luck.

Get yourself a drill with some balls. Dewalt, Mil, portacable. Anything other then orgn B&D or Ryobi (spelling)

make sure its got a 1/2 chuck.

Get your some cutting oil and 16 bit high speed metal drill bit set.

spray cutting oil on area you want to drill. Start with a 1/8th bit. Then step up your bit sizes to you get to the size you need for the extractor. Remeber to keep bit and hole oiled.

Dont force the bits cause them small one will break and then your F'd

Smoke is ok

If you break that extractor. just buy a new oil pan

ok i tried cutting notches and using a hammer and chisel but that didn't work... can i drill it out without messing my threads up?

Any HSS bit will handle the job, it'll go faster if you get something fancy like titanium or cobalt until you wear the coating off.

Honestly, don't drill it. If you stripped it already and it's that tight, you'll just break off the screw extractor in the bolt. There's probably at least 2 threads where I've posted a better tool to use. For $20 just go and buy that and be done with it.

I was able to get this bolt out of the transmission.... very top bolt in my tranny tunnel... so needless to say I had no room what so ever..

i dont see how it would still work, it says inside the socket are swirled teeth to grip the bolt. Well i dont have anything to go inside of the socket.

Inside the sockets are like TEETH basically that bite the bolt or what ever is left..

If nothing is left... grab one thats one size too small.

Hammer it on.... and then when you turn it to take it off.. the teeth will bite into the bolt and grab.. so you can loosen it.

i've decided to take my pan off and drill my plug out and go oversized. Wont the oversized plug thread itself in? and what size plug should i get?
