I don't know much about SLRs, but I do know there are some DSLR on sale Black Friday. I think circuit city, and best buy had some.

Well the main difference between the 40 and the 40x is the image quality. The 40 is a 6.1 megapixel whereas the 40x is a 10.2. So you need to figure out if you want to pay the extra money for the higher resolution.
I myself am a big fan of Nikon and purchased a D80 back in July and I'm in love with it.
Here is alot of good info about the 40 as well

As for where to get it, I got my 80 from here and had alot of good luck with them.

Another thing to consider when buying one is the lens. The kit lens it comes with is a 18-55mm therefore it doesn't have a ton zoom but it's not a bad lens for the novice user. My D80 came with the 18-135mm kit lens and I'd still like more zoom. But starting out, I'd stick with the 18-55mm and then you can always upgrade later to a different lens that will suit your needs.

Well just to let you know, I just bought the Nikon D40x on Sunday. I got the special that Best Buy is having where you get... the D40x body with 18-55mm lens + an additional (zoom) lens 55-200mm + an accessory kit that = Nikon case + extra battery + a photography guide. All for 799.97, but this is a 4 day sale that started on Sunday and will run until Wednesday only.
I'm just getting acquainted with it but I must tell you it has all kinds of bells and whistles, but super easy to figure out. The D40x takes amazing quality pictures and for the price of this deal I couldn't pass it up.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT DSLR.... I love it. The only draw back is the price of lenses. I'm looking to pick up a 70-300mm lens with the IS, but they are still around $650 or so just for the lens.
Everything i'm hearing is that IS is necessary if you don't want to carry a tripod with you ever single time you use that lens... the non-IS version is $250 or so
