Srt4 VS turbo cobalt SS.

You srt4 guys look out for those new cobalts.

They now come strapped with a turbo and stock 260hp.

I actually considered a Cobalt when my car was (briefly) up for sale. Pretty high praise for a GM product if I looked at it. Off-topic but your post made me think of this. This new one looks pretty hot- really think that DCX missed the boat on the Caliber  "SRT-4" (the car was in the works before Chrysler was on it's own so you can't blame the Americans for that piece of crap).

:drunk: Yeah we found out about a month ago at SAE.

The exterior is not too bad. The only parts I don't like are the wheels and rear lip. I've heard good things about the GXP engine, so we'll see how she does. I'm rooting for it.

That's perfect for me, that's when I'll be looking for a new car. I like the looks, I never really noticed the Cobalts before.

I still think it looks better than the caliber.. Which isn't saying much

they are both ugly but i would rather take the caliber over the cobalt

I'm sure it won't be cheap, so if I was spending the $ I would leave the sport compacts and go with a Charger or Challenger. As far as new cars...

Now if they would just resurrsect Plymouth and build 'Cudas

I'd take the lighter of the two cars.

But I won't buy either.

260 HP. Now is that bhp or crankshaft hp?
srt-4 neon is rated bhp (at the wheels).
just curious.

Posted: Tue Dec 04, 2007 2:16 pm
by hansken_yo
that has got to be crank... no one ever really advertises at the wheel. and SRT's i believe run 230 at the wheel (250 at the crank) something like that.

:withstupid:

BHP is basically HP/Torque measured at the crank with a water brake. (dyno basically) Not sure if it is the same as gross or net though. Net being with all the driven accessories running @ the crank. Gross with nothing being driven by the crank. I think all figures given these days is net hp. Pre '71 was gross. That's why in the Chilton's Manuals the hp ratings took a big dump in '71. the power output wasn't really that big of a loss, just measured in a different way. But it did steadily decline as emmisions took their toll on '60's technology.

The scary part is the SS looks so close to the New World Engine that the 08 SRT is using......less the engine cover...

Too much going on in the cobalt engine bay to me. And the SRT pic looks like it's air cooled with all the covers.

Sorry, but I like the cobalt, always have, always will.. two door, fwd, now 260hp TC? :D I like the looks as well, but not in yellow, thanks - black. :D

There's a rad cap right there next to the boost pipe.

Isn't there a lot going on in the SRT engine bay too?

I do like the new Cobalt SS. Good power and 2 door, for people that want a sporty 2 door.

^^sporty two door would be a challenger :) I'm hopeing to get my hands on one when they make the 6 speed.

Cobalts could be good with the turbo. I'm not a fan but that's ok...

My God, what a concept that GM has come up with...wow...like five years after Chrysler did it. Wow..impressive...Oh wait, didn't Chrysler's design chiefe go over to Chevy a few years back? Hmm...neat how they redo everything he did at Chrysler....psshsshshsh...lame...

No thanks. Why can't Chevy actually come up with something on their own instead of making clones of every other car company's ideas... :thefinger:

You can complain all you want, but DC has pretty much stopped producing performance trims for sport compacts. Hell, they pretty much stopped producing sport compacts. There is nothing in their lineup now to compete with cars like the Cobalt or the Civic or the Mazda 3 or the Focus. The Avenger is a bit bigger, and the Caliber is... well, it's the Caliber

Anyways DC uses "performance" more as a bling factor for guys who want to say they have an "SRT" or "R/T"... the emphasis isn't truely on performance anymore, the performance just comes as a byproduct.

So what if Chevy did this... where you criticize, I say "better late than never".

only reason i don't own a cobalt right now is because i couldn't afford it around the time i bought my neon.

Fully loaded, black on black = sex. pure sex.

Just re-read this... why did you say that? The manifolds are completely reversed from each other, because Chrysler loves to stuff their turbos in the rear, and everyone else makes the tuner's job easier by putting them in the front :P

Your right about the performance trims. They were mostly a joke, save the 04'+ SRT-4 and the 80's Shelby badged units.
I say, instead of spending all that effort polishing a turd, why not build a true performance machine from the ground up? They have the capability, they have the designers, and they have the $$$.
Why make 19 cars for five companies on the same platform? Just make one, super-badas* sport-compact car and be done with it? I mean, these guys build the C6....they can innovate when they need to. Shoot, put the damn thing on the Zeta platform and put the effort into it they did with the Sky and Solstice and then watch what they could do...

Because performance "trim" gives buyers a package they can apply to an affordable vehicle, while yielding reasonably good performance improvements. The key here is price. That was the point behind all the turbo Chryslers of the 80's (both Shelbys and regular Chrysler-badged turbocharged cars), and it remains true today.

That's why you get a four door Integra sold alongside of a GS-R or Type-R. That's why you get a 2Gn sold alongside of an SRT-4 (or DID, thanks a bunch DC for forsaking us at present), that's why you get Focus in a wagon as well as a hatch and a coupe.

From the ground up would mean a cost passed along to the consumer that few would be willing (or able) to spend on.

Performance trims for existing affordable car platforms not only makes more sense in terms of car sales, it helps flood the aftermarket industry with owners of these vehicles, who bought these affordable alternatives and have the spare cash to spend on aftermarket parts. This means the aftermarket industry is more likely to develop options for these cars. Even some extreme options.

It just makes sense for everyone. It's the sport compact car market (especially the performance trim packages) that have allowed the middle-class guy (and even sometimes the poor dude) to enjoy the excitement, and even sometimes produce rides that rival the performance of more purpose-built sportscars.

My buddy (he lurks here sometimes) wants to trade is SSS for the new turbo one (SST?). That thing sounds like its gonna be quick as hell. Should be a contender for sure.

Yeah the SSS was something to respect. The new one is gonna rock.
