1st Gen Neon help!

My wife has a 98 Neon with the DOHC motor, Recently the engine has been making a noise that sounds almost like a rock tumbler! Now, this car burns alot of oil (it always has) so I added oil and an STP oil additive but that didn't help. The noise is comming from either the cam gear on the passenger side of the motor, or the cams themselves. Does this mean the engine is about to detonate? or is it some sort of bushing or somthing? any help would be great!
