Free Mcafee Viruscan 08

Post by kevo » Mon Mar 17, 2008 10:53 am

for those that are crazy enough to surf the web without a decent antivirus

http://uk.mcafee.com/root/campaign.asp? ... 5YwQ%3D%3D

it's not a scam, its a promotion being run by natwest and the royal bank of scotland. Get it while it's still valid.

have a look at the latest virus detection comparisons. unfortunately, AVG doesn't come close. I used to run AVG myself but it lacks alot of basic features and their real time detection is horrible. I would rather have a copy of mcafee bloatware on my pc, at least it will detect more viruses and give less false positives. Surprisingly enough, Sophos came out on top in this year antivirus tests.

We can download a free copy of McAffee Enterprise 8.0i if we live in rez. It works well and isn't nearly the memory hog the retail versions are. So far it works really well.

The only comp I don't run virus software on is the mac.

I usually don't go by those tests, I actually use the software and see how it works/integrates with my system.

AVG does a good enough job for me, I am a much smarter/safer web surfer, I actually have common sense when I browse the net.

Right now, Windows Live One care on my laptop (vista)/desktop (xp pro) do a good job of integrating with my operating system, backups, tune-ups, and most importantly, speed.

I guess this is purely subjective, everyone runs different programs and has different likes/dislikes. Plus we all like to think that we are superior to each other :D

no doubt, everyone is going to have their own preference, especially in the area of anti-virus. I put this up to give those that don't have any, a fighting chance out here in this cruel inter-web world.

AVG

Avast

Clamwin

All three are free and work well. Clamwin is open source, though it doesn't have a realtime folder scanner.

I use clamwin on my spare computer that I do most of my removal/scanning work on. I also just got a free year of Kaspersky Anti-Virus for free from work (Geek Squad) and I'm testing it on my sisters computer. I'm actually thinking about getting it. I currently use AVG 7.5, Spybot S&D 1.5, and ZoneAlarm 7. All free and haven't had a single issue yet. I also have an Nforce motherboard with a built in hardware firewall as well.
