Finally someone is actually promoting that the 3000 mile oil change is BS.

If that is true..... and you can go 5k, 7k or even 10k, why did you mention that I should change my oil every 3-5 months? That would put me around 2k. I guess I don't understand the reasoning, if I followed (lets say the 7K) I would only change my oil once a year. I'm confused.

Please explain it to me.

You have to look at two factors time and/or mileage.

I mis-spoke a bit about the 3 months, mainly because most people here are diehard about the 3000/3 months.

The 6 months that you do is good. I wouldn't go much longer than that.

I've always been a freak about changing mine at 3,000. Never thought much about the time intervals.

i looked up the neon and it said 3100miles. I use synthetic and go between 5000 and 7500 miles

Because of your turbo, I would personally feel more comfortable about going 7500 if I had an oil sample at 5000 miles. Lots of heat produced by that turbo.

bah, I change it whenever I can, about 5-7k miles - but I also use synthetic.

Unless the oil says otherwise, or I do a lot of racing in a particular month, I normally do 10 000km oil changes on the neon (6250 mi). That's on 5w30 walmart oil. The old escort has an 8000km (5000mi) interval. The engine has over 305 000km on it, same 5w30 walmart oil.

I do once or twice a year unless I do heavy track usage, the neon only averages about 5K a year most of which is distance driving.

I use zmax in my car and it says you can go 6k so that's what i do. I use synthetic as well

Don't waste your money on that. Many people have had cars with lots of miles on them without Zmax and the engines run great. I used it about 5 years ago, didn't notice anything different.

So doing it every 3k is over doing it? I religiously change mine every 3k with Mobil 1 0w-40.

There is no way to tell really what is happening to the oil unless you send it out and there is no garuntee that is isnt contaimaniated when you do. No one on this board operates there car in what would be called normal condtions (how many times have you been at full throttle this week?) everybody on here even if it is just for the bonding experance between you and the car should be changing there oil at 3000mi did you notice there is not one single sited fact or study on that website it is just more enviromentalist bullshit. When you refine crude oil to make gas you get the base oils for natural motor oil as a byproduct (with many other things) and synthetic dosent use any natural products hence the name synthetic. If the califorinans cant find a way to dispose of used motor oil effectively (recycling) that is their fault.

Recycled oil is just as good and it comes out of your engine cleaner than out of the ground. The only thing that really "wears out" is the additives. The base is still good in most street driven cars.

I used to religiously use synthetic and change it ever 3k. Now I still run synthetic and run around 5k

I'm going to have to disagree with everything in regards to the 3000 mile oil change. The 3000 mile oil change was determined many years ago, like the 50's or maybe earlier. Engine oil has greatly improved in the last 50 years, as has engine efficiency (less fuel dilution in modern engines) and filtering capability. This makes the 3000 mile oil change obsolete. The same recommendation has been in place for so long, saying that it still is the appropriate interval is like acknowledging that oil and oil system technology has not advanced in the last 50 years.

My recent oil report after 5000 miles with Pennzoil Platnum returned awesome results. Blackstone even suggested going up to 7000 miles. I drive my car, I don't pussy foot around, just plain drive. If the situation comes up where I need to go wide open, I do. Or on an on-ramp, I will there too. If you follow the directions that come in the kit, there shouldn't be any contamination.
