I managed to cheat death...

Post by Mr Josh Zombie » Sat Jun 07, 2008 9:17 pm

I posted a little hint of my tornado experience in the Random posting section, and figure I'd tell the whole story....

Well, I was down home yesterday to see one of my good friends that tends to only come around once a year, and we got a few Tornado warnings. Being the typical smart asses we are, the four of us (2 good friends and the girlfriend) didn't want the warnings to ruin our get together, so we went out to my parents house to start the bon-fire. Well, it turns out we were heading into the storm... It quickly got black as hell out and Abbey (friend from Arizona) started freaking out because she had a traumatic experience in a storm once. We decide to just go get my car, and head back to Adams house since he has a basement. (We actually just CAME from his place...)

Well, we pass my dad on the way there, and Adam drops me and the girl off to grab my car. I run inside to grab my shit, and my dad came back to tell us what was going on. He seen some clouds circling over the house, so he grabbed the kids and was going to just run from the storm. (My parents live in a trailer-turned-into-house without a basement) Well, after about 5 minutes, we look off in the distance and see a HUGE effing wall of rain coming our way, and some LOW ass clouds. Knowing what comes from shit like that... I told my dad to go, tell the girlfriend to get the FUCK in the car, and I haul ass back to Adams. (it's only a 5 minute drive in the country)

My dad goes straight, and I take a turn because it's faster... well... that was a mistake. I get over the hill, and see HUGE effing dust clouds a block away... and realized they weren't dust clouds... it was a tornado. I drive forward enough to get to the next road to turn around, and as soon as the car is flipped around, the rain just CRASHES into the car. I can't see 5 ft in front of me, and the wind is so damn strong it's knocking trees over.

My girlfriend starts sobbing, I try to calm her down and drive the opposite way of the tornado, carefully. I get back to the main road, and head on to adams, dodgeing fallen branches. Luckly, the storm passes quickly, and I was able to avoid the tornado.

We get to adams, rush to the basement, and just wait. Once the storm completly passes, I start talking to everyone, and we hear the police scanner. Turns out what I saw, wasn't just a Tornado. It was two chasing each other, basically tearing everything apart....

Yea, I got extremely lucky. Lesson learned, PAY ATTENTION TO THE FUCKING SIRENS.

I should have known better... hell 6 years ago MANY tornados passed through that part of ohio, and I watched one tear through the field behind our house... It took out part of van wert, about 6 houses, part of a factory, and a lot of other shit.... Today I realize how lucky i was 6 years ago, and yesterday.

Wow! Yeah, ummm, Josh? You don't want to start a career as a storm chaser. Especially in the 'Balt.

Glad to hear you guy were ok. Tornadoes are not something you want to eff around with
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Shit man! I was expecting to read about a flying cow or some hail damage (lucky btw), not being 60yd from a tornado. Looks like there is some more nasty looking stuff headed our way today. Nothing like uber-hot and muggy mornings, then severe storm evenings.

Holy shit thats scary as hell!!! Thankfully all parties involved were okay and you managed to get away from it. As someone else asked, did the car make it out okay?

i ran over a branch, but it didn't seem to do anything at all to the car. thankfully there was no hail, just thick heavy rain drops.

i was extremely grateful that everyone made it back with no injures. to both ourselves, and our cars. it was some scary, scary shit though.

hell, when we got to the basement, my girlfriend was just sobbing because she was so scared, so i started to hug her, and hell, i almost started sobbing myself. i was that damn scared. But, i knew if she seen me freaking out, it wouldn't help anything. i always have to be the calm collective one.

I have always wanted to be close enough to experience a tornado. Would you say you felt as though you were in real serious danger or was it kinda happening-so-fast-wtf-is-going-on kinda thing?

Movies are not reality. Trust me, I drive in bad weather all of the time for my jobs. I missed a funnel cloud/tornado/water spout (not sure which as it happened so fast) Friday afternoon in the middle of nowhere east of Montpelier, IN on SR 18.

Josh- glad that everyone came out okay.
