So I just bought a HP laptop for the wife...

...its real nice. 17" screen, AMD Turion X2 TL-60, 250GB hard drive, Built-in wireless 802.11bg, 3GB of DDR2 memory, Burns DVDs and CDs, Built-in webcam, mic.

Anyways, now that she has a new laptop, I want a new desktop. I found this pretty nice Gateway gaming desktop (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Gateway- ... tDetail.do) that I like but I'm not sure if there is a better one to get for the same price or cheaper?

What do you think? All I use my desktop for now is to play World of Warcraft(about 30hrs a week), upload pics, make videos, and surf the net.

i definitely would not waste my money on that gateway.

for half of that price you can build a good system.. almost equal to that one as far as the specs go, but better because of the quality of the components you throw in it, vs generic gateway oem stuff..

Yeah but a rig is not going to have the versatility of a laptop. I have an extremely low level laptop and then my $2000 PC...but I can't exactly lug the desktop with 22" monitor around campus

find someone to build you one. not to mention, gateway is one of the worst computers you can buy. at the VERY least, get a dell

Ever since I built my first desktop, I will never again buy one from a store. For $1200, you can easily make a machine that outperforms that Gateway. I'm with Opi, if you don't know much about building computers, find someone who does. You'll save yourself an ass load of money.

i do most my shopping at Best Buy and hardly go to Circuit City anymore. Best Buy has the same one I was just check CC.

I can build one or have my brother-n-law help me, I just dont know what to buy. Putting it together is easy.

Don't ever consider using any parts purchased from Best Buy when you can get them much cheaper off Newegg or other online sites...

not the huge savings i was talking about, but this configuration would blow the gateway away.. i did this up real quick just by going to each category and choosing 'most reviews' and generally selecting the first item (most reviews = most popular = probably pretty damn good product).

can get the price lower by tweaking the power supply, case, maybe a core 2 duo instead of quad, cheaper RAM, etc..

Gateways suck especially after dell handed their ass to them in the discount computer wars in the late 90's. Either have someone build one or get one from dell.

I would rather use an old PC from the 80's than buy or use a Dell.

HP FTW!!

I've seen DDR800 2x2GB and Kentsfield doesn't need an aftermarket cooler, the intel one is HUGE and does the job fine. Just get some arctic silver 5.

But yeah I agree

I got that Antec 900 case at Best Buy for $90 (price match FTW). However, I don't have the stuff to put in it, yet. The computer I'm building though totals out to around $1,200.

i did not even notice that the cpu was a retail package, totally skipped over it.. when it comes to newegg i expect everything to be oem so while skipping the entire title of the cpu i went straight to fans, heh.

as for the ram, like i said i just picked the first item.. everything can be changed/tweaked for better options and prices.

You should talk to Nate, his setup is pretty sick. Altho I doubt you need a 42" hd LCD tv as a monitor, final fantasy 11 (much better graphics than wow) looks pretty sick on it, so wow should look spectacular.
